This is where I've got to so far with my rebuild. Challisc was asking. So here's the current state of play. I'm meaning to leave the wheel boxes and floor aluminium as paint will just get knackered on these bits. I have an old rubber mat from a cow cubicle for the floor - half inch thick rubber.
And I think I'll be painting the crossmember black. It doesn't look right galvanised. Satin black or gloss black? Which do you think it should be?

looking great fergie, who knows, mabey one day mine will look as impressive! I too didnt like the look of a galvy chassis so i fully undersealed the how thing!
Wow!!
Looking great!!
I would definately go for satin black for the rear x member......but don't forget to prime it first 'cos paint don't like sticking to galv and will flake off in no time.
I think 'International paints' do a primer specifically for galv.
Yeah etch primer isn`t it? Heard it said if you rough surface and treat with vinegar it helps a bit with adhesion. I see you`re in Renfrewshire Fergie. Is that Deanpark or could it be Bishopton.Sorry for being a nosey ****** but it just looks familiar.

I dunno, the galvanized crossmember doesn't look that bad, if I had a galvanized frame, I'd leave it unpainted just to show it off :) If you do paint it, definitely go for satin black, gloss black looks like crap. I've read that you're supposed to allow galvanized steel 6 months to weather before painting it, but etch primer will probably work just fine.
btw.. what's that black triangular plastic think on the bulkhead under the dash?
That`s his hand throttle mate. I thought we all had one!! he he!

I was just going to do the crossmember and leave the rest of the chassis galvanised. People seem to think a bumper is still to be fitted when its galvanised. I've been using International Paints 2 pack etch primer which is really a wash primer. £17 a litre from Carr Paints in Maryhill. Good for sandblasted stuff, aluminium and galvanised. (I hope)

It's completely different from the series 2a one. Haven't got much experience with series 3s.

Definately satin, or even matt. They scream "Hammerite over rust" when they're glossy.

Thanks, I've been doing a lot of work on it. THe handbrake is just a standard series 2a one..? Maybe you're just used to seing them on the other side?

Progress to date.
Actually I now have front bumper, number plate, sills and rear mudflaps fitted plus different tyres.
I could probably get an MOT very soon but I'm in no hurry.

There were two types of hand brakes in the Series 2s and 2As. The early type was a short stubby and straight hand brake, like shown in the picture. The other type is one like a Series 3, a bent shaped one, which is also rather much longer than the early Series 2 type.
There were also two other types of hand throttles. One type is the horizontal control, and the other is a vertical handle type, both were on the Series 2/2A production vehicles which were diesels. Although I am not entirely sure if it was an option or not.
Anyway, Fergie, that rebuild looks like it is coming along lovely. Those are SATs you have fitted, arn't they?

Looking good Fergie, did you have any trouble getting the panels to fit back together,I've read that it can be a bit of a fiddle getting the door gaps right and getting a straight line along the galv trim up the sides?

Steel,
Tyres now fitted are two pairs of remould All Terrain radials from ebay. One pair are nearly new, other pair are about half worn. Came off the Rostyle rims I can't manage to flog over in the For sale section. The ones in the picture are Deestone Extra Traction on the back and a pair of regroovables on the front. Regroovables aren't legal for on-road use hence me ending up changing all the 750x16 off road crossplies for 205x16s ATs.
Chris,
Hardtop is fitted at the moment but its not necessarily a permanent configuration. Its got the fold down tailgate so its not a big job to take the roof and sides off and fit the sticks. The intention is to try out the softtop as well, maybe next summer and if I like it I might swap them about winter and summer. I'm also going to try and tidy up the truck cab and try it on too at some point although it is really rough. Its a toy after all and I'm going to play with it!
Mick,
Lining up the panels wasn't too bad. Main thing I found important was to get the rear body tub aligned properly with the bulkhead. I used a couple of strings along the sides to help. The rest of it was pretty straightforward. Not that I'm claiming its all lined up entirely perfectly mind you. It is a landrover after all.
Madoobri,
Ta.
