Hi, Just joined this forum as I was looking for an answer to a problem with my 1992 disco. Went out this evening and realised i have no headlights. I can flash main beam and have sidelights but that is all. Have checked all fuses etc but cant find an obvious problem. Cant find anything in Haynes manual either.
Its really weird cos the same thing has happened to my rover vitesse too.
Any ideas would really be appreciated, June

Hello June :bigwave: welcome to the forum :)

I'm not well up on Discos, but it sounds like the switch to me. If it's like a Defender, the switch has three contacts = off, sidelights, dipped headlights. The headlight contact will have cooked itself for some reason, eg are you running with spotlights as well ... ? Hence the sidelights still work, and the courtesy flash is on a separate switch.

If it's like the Defender it is fairly straightforward to get to the switch, the Haynes will cover that, and then any damage to the contacts will be easily visible. The hardest part is paying for a new one :p they don't come cheap new, but it's the kind of thing that comes up on Ebay, or people like Spotter on this forum sometimes have them.

Good luck and let us know how you get on :)

Thanx for all your advice. As soon as it was light this morning I decided to check out the switch and lo and behold there was a wire disconnected so job done easily. Just gotta sort out the car now which is not a loose wire.

I agree with Bernie, it sounds like the switch has partially worn out. Should have thought about that too considering I have just replaced my switch to sort out the same problem. DOH! Sorry was being a little dim!

Hope you get it sorted mate!

Yes thanks. Much brighter now since fixing broken wire. Well as bright as these lights are anyway. Are there any lights available that are a bit brighter than the standard landy ones. I'm sure i've seen candles that shine brighter than my headlights. June
