Hi, I have a 91 Disco that a couple of days ago I noticed charging light glowing faintly. Yesterday while driving, the charging light came on, then went off and so did rev counter! Did this on/off a few times but is now staying mostly on. Checked voltage to battery and getting 14+v. Can't see any obvious loose wiring around alternator - any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi,

This is a common problem on series I discos, you'll find lots of posts on this site with regards to your symptoms.

The fault is down to a bad connection on the back of your alternator. Remove the single cable from the rear of the alternator and give it a good clean, this should cure the problem.

In fact if you have this months issue of LRI (might be LRM, can't remember which) you'll find this very problem covered in the techincal help section.

Check your alternator for faulty connection or a dying alternator. The light indicates there's a variance in charge between your battery and alternator so something's a miss. I'd start with alternator with the symptoms you posted though if your battery looks good and you're seeing your tachometer jump like that.

Thanks for the replies. Took off cable at back of alternator, cleaned and out back on - no change. Thsi morning however the light is now pulsing as I am driving along, and is sometimes much dimmer than it was. I still get 14+V to the battery, so I am beginning to suspect dodgy wiring or possible alternator. Will keep looking and get back with anything.

Can anyone recommend a good LR garage in Aberdeen area, other than the actual dealer? Not lazy honest, just struggle with time and electrics!

Cheers

I had exactly the same fault on my 91 disco. The fact that the rev counter is not working is symptomatic of an alternator fault, this results in a gradual discharge of the battery, you will probably have the ignition light on even without the key inserted. The alternator is a fairly common type, I bought an exchange unit from my local motor accessory shop for around £45. I am sure any small garage would sort you out without having to go to a main dealer. See my last post re ignition keys to realise why i am not in love with main dealers!!!
good luck

Hi,
Check the tensioning of the alternatorbelt first. if this one starts slipping, this gives symptoms like you discribe.
