hello
I am the increasingly despondent owner of a jeep cherokee TD. Its got its good points comfort and fuel economy but parts cost a fortune and carpets are a bl**dy nuisance. I was thinking of maybe a double cab or a 110 sw. I need to carry the family and two dogs with another soon :) at other times 1/4 ton of firefighting equipment across some rough ground. Does this sound feasible if so which are the best engines

Hello and welcome to the forums Gaz :bigwave: Sounds like you need a lightweight and a trailer:D seriously though, some of the other guys who actually use there vehicles for work duties should be along soon enough to give you some ideas as to what would best suit your requiremnets.

Hello Gaz and welcome to the forum. If you ahve any questions about almost any topic then just ask!!

As for a crew cab 110. they will carry you and 3 other peeps in relative comfort (four in slightly less) and can carry up to 1/2 ton in the back too! Plus if driven right rough ground shouldn't be a problem! I have a 90 SW and have had 1/2 ton in the back and towing +15 foot boat too the length of Wales with no problems whatsoever. Have also taken it filled to the roof across bumpy tracks and mud too with no troubles!

I have a 200TDI engine in mine and is basically bomb proof!! If you want a new crewcab then it will be a TD5, which are quieter and faster but have many electornic parts!! TDI engines are also easy to maintain yourself! Just the ecconomy isn't going to be as good as your jeep!!

What sort of price range are you looking at??

Been there, done that, bought a 110 csw ;)
I decided to get a cheap petrol 110 and find a jap diesel to put in it, best of everything then as landy tdi's aren't too cheap to buy and the engines seem expensive second hand compared to Jap stuff

Geobloke,

Just wondering what you mean by "economy isn't as good as your jeep."

I thought Tdi engines were pretty good on fuel economy or was that not what you meant? Or is this a relative thing? I drive a V8 so anything is almost better fuel economy-wise. I'm hearing some of you guys getting around 30 mpg. I thought that was good.

Oh and welcome fatgazzer. :p

Ello! CDNrover! I thought that the TD cherokees were more efficient than defenders?? might be wrong! Isn't economy a bit of a null notion over the pond considering how cheap fuel is?? ;)

I do get around 30 mpg admittedly but thats till isn't brilliant!

Oh I have a couple of mates in Edmonton Uni who are looking to go off roading around there. Do you know of any clubs they can join? they say they found a website but it hadn't been updated for 2 years so figure the off road scene had died!! They don't drive a LR though, but a Nissan Pathfinder!

G'day Geobloke...or evening.

I have no idea about the TD Jeeps. We don't get them over here or haven't before but we're starting to see them marketing the TD Libertys so maybe this will be the push LR needs to bring diesel over here.

LOL, cheap fuel? Well in relation to what you guys are paying it's cheap I guess but relative to us, it's never been higher. I'm paying a $1/L now and some parts of the country it's higher. Considering diesel is not our primary fuel we're kinda forced to pay these high prices whether we want to or not. Also, Alberta is rich in oil reserves (I think we have the larger reserves than OPEC) yet we're being taxed quite heavily so the gov't is making hand over fist. What would you say if I told you that Alberta has no debt? We paid our debt off from all the revenue we make off our oil industry and typically see surpluses in the billions of dollars every year yet our provincail gov't is making cuts to health, education, etc. and raising our property taxes all the time.

Right now it's costing me $90 to fill up a tank of fuel...and with a V8 that can get expensive and you don't get far on a V8 tank.

As for your mates, have them check this club out:

http://www.na4wda.org/

They're a good bunch. I've gone wheeling with them and they're always up for a good trail run and I think they meet every Wednesday night for beer and pizza and to just shoot the breeze. It's an eclectic group too. Lots of Jeeps and Toyotas, some Suzukis, GMs, Fords, etc., a couple Rovers but I've never seen them out.

Also there's a 4x4 park near Edmonton that I go to as well every now and then. You can find out info about them here:

http://www.detailplustires4x4park.ca/asc.html

Lee, who's the owner of the company is a great guy and his park is a lot of fun for a place so close to the city. He's a Rover guy. He's got a D90, D110 double cab and a Series truck.

Have them check it out. Are they serious wheelers or more looking to do trails and stuff.

Hhehehe! Canada does indeed have a heck of alot of oil hidden away!! The problem is that it is largely locked up in oil shales which are difficult to process and as such quite expensive! HAving said that companies are researching at this very minute in to the best (yeah right!! more like cheapest and easiest!) way of separating the oil from the shale!!

As for me mate (Mark and his wife Anna), he is just getting in to the off road world, he and I did some good routes together when he was working here in Bangor, so not a complete newbie but getting there! Is a diamond bloke and being a "Geo" too he is not affraid of getting dirty, in fact like alot of us Geo's he is more at home up to his waist in mud than in a suit!! ;) ;) I will pass the websites on to him. As it happens he and I are planning on driving the Dempster highway in August/september. Just wish I could afford to bring Eva (my D90) across with me!!

So are you a "serious wheeler" or "Trial rider"??

“I do get around 30 mpg admittedly but thats till isn't brilliant!”

Geo I get just over 30 mpg myself but at least it isn’t a V8;)

“Been there, done that, bought a 110 csw

Steve, been wondering whether to go along that track myself even going for a 11A. The problem being that giving me a spanner is like giving a monkey a loaded gun the last time I changed the oil on my daughters car the engine seized. Which engine have you put in yours and does it work?

I am looking to spend about £10k in total but am looking to keep it for a while so residual value isn’t a problem.

yeah it would be 85.9p a litre (!!!!) at the garages round here, which converted is apparantly $1.96.

no wonder v8's aint so popular here

got a fair bit of oil offshore in scotland, yet that doesn't seem to affect prices.

I can't even imagine $1.96/L for fuel. That's insane!! I can see why most drive diesels.

Yikes!

I'm looking to import a Tdi Defender into Canada right now so hopefully that goes well as I have no desire to pay $2/L to only be able to go 500km on a tank of gas...

We have a lot of McDonalds over here...run on french fry oil...
