Went for a trundle this morning to take the dog out, hit a small pot hole at about 20mph, heard a bang and a bit of bouncing, when I stopped to let the dog out I thought I better have a persuse at the back end, found passenger side rear spring had jumpped out of it's top seat. Got home, took the wheel off and found the shock had broken as well. Ooohhhh bu**er!!! :o

Had new H/D springs to fit anyway but as the shocks were only a year and a half old didn't expect one of them to break, mind you there is signs of corrosion in the broken area, I suspect it had been cracking for some time, bl**dy Britpart! :frown2:

It only happened because I said I was going to get on with the 6 pot engine today. Anyhow the question is do you think the shock broke allowing the spring to become dislodged, or the other way round?

Well not being a coil spring expert, :p but I suppose it's possible, there must be extra stresses with the greater articulation of the axle.

Funnily enough, I've never seen a broken shock like this on a leafer, only broken leaves and the springs bent the wrong way and worn through.

More beer tokens into the money pit!! ;)

Shiptart strikes again, i'm afraid when it comes to a choice of bush mechanics or using this company for stuff, bush mechanics will win hads down anyday of the week, i have had and heard of too many bad experiences with this company for me to trust them with anything other than a washer nowadays.

Wife broke both front springs in a week on an Astra 1.7TD ('M' plated)she used to have.
Said that there was a 'bang' as she drove through a pot-hole, but thought nothing of it.
Later the other side went 'bang'

I looked & at first thought she'd just displaced the wheel arch liner as it was loose, until I took the wheels off........

And we'd just agreed a px on it for the Fabia as well!! :(
(they could have waited a week to break)

Many moons ago I managed to crush the rear suspension on my Skoda 110R, :smart: I don't know how it happened, it could have been the 3 stationery engines I put on the back seats or that tonne of fire wood I collected in it, hence the advent of a Landrover! ;)

Fitted the new springs (Britpart H/D) and the new Kayaba shocks I bought first thing this morning, I suppose its not that bad, £24.63 each plus VAT. Quite a remarkably straight forward job, only one bolt sheered off.

I've seen a dicovery break a rear shock absorber before when green laning, I think it was a non branded replacement.
The spring didn't dislocate in that instance but can see how it might.
