Hi peeps,
Just been reading Big Sandy's post with interest, as I am getting the old blue screen lots more than I should be.
Running 98se and the systhem monitor often shows the processor running at around 70% even when no windows open, so I have checked for bugs with NAV and also run Addaware, defragged, dumped cookies and all that other stuff, but I did notice that when I do a Ctrl, Alt + Del the window opens up and there must be 15 - 20 things in there ( is this the Systhem tray?) running in the back ground, question is what have I got to leave running and how do I stop the other stuff from running as soon as I start up the PC?

TIA peeps.

Go to the 'find files'
Type msconfig
open this file when found (doubleclick)
click on the 'startup' tab

This shows you which files/programs are loaded at startup. You can uncheck any familiar programs which are not used each session. This prevents it loading loads of stuff that you never use, but only uncheck what you are certain about.......

Manthing be very carefull when deleting start up or process files.

Try searching on Google for some of your running files....i.e wdfmgr.exe

wdfmgr.exe runs on my system for Windows Media player 10+

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/wdfmgr/

or you can use the process library search function to find out what the file does and if its needed. Also always get a second opinion from the net to see if it is actually required. Allthough Liutilities is normally always spot on.

Hope this helps

I find Task List Programs (http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm) really useful. It explains what is good, what can be removed from startup and what are adware/spyware programs you need to get shot of.

Aye, we've noticed this with ours! I think most of the stuff with titles that don't make sense to non computer folks are best left well alone! We did notice though that things like the Roxio software use a lot of resources, but can be closed down on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen by right clicking and switching them off. That might help maybe? With my computer, the hungriest thing is the printer, and N.A.V (which we'll be swapping to AVG very soon, when the subs run out!)

On the subject of AVG...we found out what caused the fault with the laptop... seemingly our son found a virus, and N.A.V gave the option to delete or quarantine, so he deleted it. Thereby deleting windows explorer as well.... He found the same virus ( viewing the same site.....teenagers eh?) but this time with AVG upon going to delete it he got the warning 'do not delete this, but isolate and remove (or similar)as deleting it will cause your computer to run improperly', so this time the computer is safe. Good old AVG!

Ctrl-alt-delete gets you the task manager, and you can do all sorts of damage with that! Tread carefully!
