View Full Version : TD5 intermittent loss of power

I have had my TD5 Disco for a few months now, and it occasionally seems to lose power.

Today I was on a round trip of 60 miles. Going there everything was fine coming back, it felt like it was running on 4 cylinders when it reached top gear. Also it was slower than normal accelertaing. Felt as if the wheels needed balancing (althiough they obvioulsy do not). I stopped the engine and on restarting, engine was fine.

This has happened on 2 or 3 occasions now.

Has anyone experienceed anything similar?

Hi,

There is a known problem with the Td5 DII where oil is forced in to the wiring loom that goes from the injector rail to the ECU module. This causes similar symptoms to those you are experiencing (feels like it's running on 4 pots etc).

Check this thread out for further info;

http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26673

Remove the wiring harness connectors from the top of the ECU module and check if the contact pins are contaminated with oil. If they are you will need to replace the wiring harness with a modified version which prevents the creepage of oil along the loom.

More information is available here;

Thanks for that.

Mine is a 2001 model, just out of warranty. If this is a known fault will Land Rover replace the loom, or am I looking at replacing it myself?

Thanks again for the reply.

Hi There,

I had similar problems with a td5 recently. Shortly before the fuel pump completely packed in. Its worths a look.

Have you let it run out (or low) on diesel recently?

Also, if its the fuel pump, it probably wont rev beyond 2000rpm in any gear.

I had a similair experience a couple of years ago when my `99 td5 was at 35k. The loss of power was the ecu going into `fall back` mode or get you home. On restarting everything ok.
You don`t want to know what was wrong with mine..as they say in Scotland you would `crap yer breeks`..but one question, does your temp. go up as this happens then settle again after restarting and running ok?..If answer is `no` then the aforementioned fault wouldn`t apply...but if its `yes` then yyou may well have a serious problem. Post a reply or pm me.
Cheers
Dave

It actually turned out to be 2 of the injectors had failed.

I had it into Rossleigh Edinburgh, who to be fair only charged me for one, which saved around £400.00 from the bill. Although at £75.00 per hour labour charges, they can afford it!!

When I bough the car it had an extended warranty through Motorcare, who turned out to be to charlatons. Refused to pay up because they had to give me a claim number first. Claim line is only open between 9.00 and 5.00, so if you breakdown outside of thse hours you are basically knackered. Or as they suggested I should have waited until they opened. Not really an option in a layby by the side of the A1. :Rant:

Glad to hear you got the problem resolved, even if it did make you a few hundred quid lighter. Yher problem I hadf resultedf in a new factory engine, fitted under extended warranty without problem. I signed the claim invioce for just inder £5k..see what I meant about `crapping yer breeks`!
cheers
