View Full Version : 99 Sd
I was looking to purchase a 99 SD, but am confused by articles I've read about this year and model. Are these a series II, or did the series II start in 00.? Some articles appear to say the 99 was a new version year, but others appear to show the 99 SD the same at the 98 model.
Thanks,
Dave

Hi,
The series II discovery was available from 99, but this was in parallel with the last of the Series I discos.
The SD is not a model code we have in the UK, but assuming it has a diesel lump, if it has the Td5 unit fitted it is a Disco II (it says Td5 on the top of the engine cover).
The Disco II is actually totally differant from the series I (apart from the rear door) but trying to think of a easy way to discribe to you how to tell has made me think abit..............ooooh my head hurts :D

Yeh, virtually everything was changed, but how do you easily discribe what the differences are ?
eg Headlamps - they both have two, they are both squarish, they both illuminate the road (sort of).
See what I mean ? :D

The lenses are completely different. The old Disco is rectangular, whilst the series II again is retangular but with a circular lamp insert for the full beam.
Or to save any confusion, just get the serial number and check with LR.
flush dorr handles went out with disco1 i think, so if they stick out should be s2.. rear overhang, disco2 about 2 miles, lol, feet I mean and disco 1 10 inches from the back of the rear wheel arch to the bumper, err,, there are loads.. if diesel, 4 = cylinder d1, 5 = cylinder d2  :D

Or check out some dealer's websites. Most of them will show pictures of their stock cars. Hopefully then you can see the difference.

Nick,
I think you are getting confused between the Disco II and the Disco IIa (03MY) trucks.
The first Disco II had virtually identical headlights (ie no seperate high beam) as the series I Disco.
Fair point about the chassis numbers though.

Andy, fair point. Didn't realise there was a final variation, I am use to Defenders (am on my first Disco).
Nick.
the second version of the series 2 was commonly known as the "Facelift" model ;) on my first disco 2 too
