First of all would you go?
If given the chance to have your Landy shipped to South America in a container, cleared through customs for you then get taken on a 1 month off road tour through Patagonia would you go for it? and how much do you think you would expect to pay?

In a 40 foot container you can fit 3 90's 2 110's or a 130 + a 110.

Fly cheap and hire a vehicle from a specialist out there? I know you don't have your own vehicle and kit but less hassle. What if your container is tied up in customs red tape for 29 of your 30 day trip? Remember temporary imports of vehicles and carnets can be a beggar.
Something to help here, but bikes mainly. Someone on there will know current situation. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/index.shtml

You could but what would you pay to ship your own out, shipping would take into account the time to clear customs.

Hmmm sounds very much like a leading question this, thinking of arranging trips to Patagonia Astbury?;)

Yes I would go if 4 weeks holiday could be secured in one go between myself and Mrs AJ and if I could do without the vehicle for the shipment period before and after the tour.
I believe if you were looking at organising such trips, there would be little interest for the above reasons. I think those people interested in such destinations will be looking at staying there for months rather than weeks unless it was a fly/drive arrangement.

Take a look at this then!!
"
How much does it cost?
The entry fee of £24,000 includes the rally itself; 32 nights bed and breakfast for two people sharing a twin or double room in high quality hotels; pre-start welcome and grand finale dinners; 30 other evening meals in your hotel or in speciality restaurants; various other functions and receptions; rally number plates and door panels; a souvenir medallion for all finishers; event clothing; fully detailed tulip roadbook; etc, etc. Hotel upgrades to single room accommodation are available at extra cost. No refunds are available to participants not taking up accommodation booked for them, for whatever reason."
Looks like some people have more money than sense! This trip in china was fully booked! and at £24,000 a go that is a heck of a lot of dosh!
http://www.hero.org.uk/gtc/qanda.html
And here is the itinerary of the trip
http://www.hero.org.uk/gtc/itinerary.html
And here is the list of 30!! vehicles that went on the trip
30x24,000 !!! = £720,000 I think at that rate setting up 2 trips a year should keep me happy'ish!
so if any of you fancy Patagonia or Mongolia or even the doing the long way round I am taking deposits now :))
Edit: I take it back that they have more money than sense....they just have more money than I do and if I did have that much to spend on a trip like that I would so long that £24,000 was equivocal to my pocket as the cost of my usual anual trips away
£24,000!!!!! No way I thought. However, after reading throught the details and found out the price included a 'souvenir medallion for all finishers,' it's well worth it and I shall seriously by considering dipping into my savings to participate in the next event. :D

Its mad innit!
Just goes to show what people will pay in order to have someone hold their hands.
Makes me wonder how they came up with that figure? I think it must be the brain child of some toff with a lot of toff friends.
BUT!!!
If you knew someone that had good knowledge of Patagonia, good backup crew, mechanical and medical know how with a full support team and camps ready set up in advance for you with a meal ready cooking for everyone following a full days hard off road and fantastic views would you pay say around £5000 to have every bit of sorting out of shipping your vehicle, meeting you with your vehicle at the airport then being guided around for a month?
Sure you could do this on your own by flying out and hire a local vehicle, but we all know its not the same as using your own that you have spent months or years getting ready for exactly this sort of thing. Plus if you ding your own Landy in Patagonia it just becomes a battle scar that you are proud of.
And if we are honest most people spend year adding bits to their Landy's only to maybe take part in some green lane driving and maybe going to an off road event. all this done in a Land Rover that is preped and modified to tackle much bigger things.
Shipping a Landy out to a country that you know nothing about how customs work, what bribes to pay and when to and when not to pay them can be a daunting task.
Personally I would quite like to shell out 5k for a trip of a life time maybe once or twice just to experience this type of travel tourism and to be able to say I did it!
So what do you think?

There is an advertisement in the LRO mag for a trip to Africa for ten days. You get a fully loaded 110 for the week, accommodation in b+b (cheaper if you camp) and a guided tour and 10 days off-road.......... £1700 ea.. I think that’s quite good.

It looks like Africa has 100's of people that offer this type of service. But not many in South America or Asia
Its mad innit!

Astbury,
Totalling up what we would spend on 2 or 3 holidays a year (preparation, holiday, spending) would probably come to near the 5k mark so yes, it would be worth it for such a special adventure. It just seems a lot to shell out all at once. Would the safety and security of the vehicle in transit be guaranteed in the deal?

Anything in the container would be insured for its value, the customers would have to buy holiday insurance that would cover things like medical costs.
C
How many 'adventurers' included in the fee and are flights included or additional?
AJ

I'm sure you entertained the idea of buying some Landies and renting them out to folks who fly in... why not do this?

Not knowing if it will work I think it is best to ship peoples Landy's out for the first few years. Also I still think that most people will want to drive their own, after all what is the point of spending all that time and money getting our Land'y to the stage that they are almost ready to drive around the world, then leave them at home.
How about a few of us all get together to do a reccee trip?
I could sort out the shipping from the UK and main land Europe

But it would be the best trip ever! Morocco would feel like a trip down to the corner shop...
C
Astbury,
We are always up for somewhere different to visit and I believe Patagonia would be an excellent area to explore. We're committed to other holidays this year, but will certainly discuss it with you if/when we meet up on our way to Slovenia later this year.
