View Full Version : Speedo Light

The light in speedo in the Gurkha has never worked since I've had the vehicle, and I recently looked behind the dash to start fixing it, wondering whether to ffit the brighter LEDs that fit in the place of the bulbs, etc to discover the entire white tubular plastic assmbly that the bulb and bulb holder fits into has been snapped off!

I have a cunning plan though. Today I bought a cheap pack of 4 small stick-on LED lights. They have a directional beam because one side of the hemisphere of the lens over the LED is silvered.

I am going to mount some of these on the front of the dash and illuminate it from 'above' as it were. Will be doing this tomorrow, hopefully, so will let you know how it goes.

No batteries, I've got them wired in so they come on with the lights.

Got to wait for dark to see if they do any good. Also discovered that the bloody packaging was wrong - they shine red not blue!

Should match the compass then.

Yeah, don't mind red to be honest. Long as it's not pink!

I'm just getting sick of trying to estimate the speed at night by the buffeting of the hood (that's not a euphemism).

Here's a photo of the LED lights. They look shiny because the inside of the domes is silvered to direct the shine onto the dash area. Tey are central above teh tem and the fule gaugues and the other two are spaced equally above the speedo. The angle of the photo makes them look oddly spaced, but they're not!Wiring goes through the slots into the area behind the dash. If the pictures in the dark work out (might have a problem seeing the effect due to camera flash etc) I'll post them.

Excellent - just had a test play with the lights and I can actually see the dashboard now. Will try to figure out how to take a picture!

Okay, here's a picture of the red light ensemble, taken in the dark with no flash. It doesn't look quite like this in real life, there's no yellow to the light at all, it's all red, and the distribution of light is better, more even and less harsh.

But it gives you the idea. Before, there was nothing visible of the speedo at all. You douldn't even have known there was a speedo there at all!

I see you have the 2 lights on the speedo by 80mph,and 120mph,surly(shirley)this is wrong,(unless you have summat hiding under the bonnet):yikes:
You need to rotate the speedo clock wise,so the lights read 20mph and 60mph.:D

Seriously,looks better than without.;)

The entire bulb holder fitment has been smashed off the back of the speedo by some gentle squaddie in the past.

Whatever you do you will find if you do any night time driving you'd want the facility to either reduce the brightness or darken the display. It really destroys your night vision when there is nothing else around and you've got a bright speedo/rev counter in front of you!
