When i try and check my email using Outlook express i get this error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: '*********@freeuk.com', Server: 'pop.freeuk.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Any thoughts????

Cheers,

Bryan

Untick the secure sending/receiving so that it defaults back to port 25.

thats a server unreachable... usually means mail server is down. try callin your isp and confirm it with them.

That is trying to connect on the SSL port of 110 hence the port in the error, most hosts dont run SSL email so port 110 would return a Socket Error.

Remove the account from your mail client and add it again making sure you don't tick anything that mentions secure or SSL.

Did you sort that out James?? :?

jjsaul

no.

still doesn't work.

port 110 is the standard port, if i did select secure it goes onto port 995.

Hmm. Strange. All my FreeUK accounts are still responding here. I had a bit of flakiness last night but it only resulted in me swearing at the PCs, depriving them of power and going to bed.... Then you rang :)

I would reccomend just to "leave it" until it sorts itself out, but as always you are awaiting an important email :(

Saratoga
17th Apr 2005, 20:00
you could try creating a dial up entry on your pda/mobile and dialing into FreeUK's 0845 number with your user id and login details for at leat a minute, then try and use the webmail facility...

Saratoga

Don't they offer some form of webmail? You could maybe check your email that way until its sorted.

Yes, but you need to have logged in (ie Dialed in via modem direct to their servers/08xx numbers) for at least a minute to access those servers. Once you've dialed in it keeps your account alive for about 90 days....

You have a 9,600 baud modem don't you... Nokia?? You don't need the speed, but you do need their computers to recognise your login, and be online for a minute. You're laptop or PDA can sort out the connection surely...

Treat it as a warning. FreeUK are unstable. Get bags of Gmail accounts :D :D :D They have POP access!

:LAA: My Virgin dial-up is set to send and receive every couple of minutes. I get an error message from time to time - sometimes it just goes away, sometimes I have to reconnect, sometimes reboot, and sometimes just wait for Virgin to sort themselves out :D

you are trying to send through a bt server and you have a free uk account? do free uk have thier own smtp server, with the authentication changes it may be that this is no longer possible. i would suggest mailing tech support at bt and free uk and asking them. a lot of isp's are tightening security on there server to stop people doing this.

:shakehead: Well in my experience that would explain everything :p

Yeah, and I got shafted a few months ago when you had no problems! remember?! I lost about 6 accounts from them :( Used for a variety of spam protection. My ISP now handles that :)

You shouldnt be using ANY authentication inside of BTs network. If it does need username/password then you'd need to get the details of the isp holder and put them in. Besides, I am sure you can remember your fathers login details for the ISP better than him :)

nope neither of us know what they are....

the username can be obtained from our router but neither of us can remember the password.....

in that case, go and use the gmail smtp and pop server details, and just send using one of the gmail accounts. You just have to set a "from" or "reply to" address
