If you can stand to have me and my Disco along I would like to come. All work now complete, the low tow bar is gone, new bumpers front and back, winch, 2" lift, diff guards that dont fall off, rock sliders and jacking points all round.
Oh and I've been practicing. Hope to have some waffle board and gloves by then..

Thanks for the reply Lewis. Seems I may be at Robin Hoods bay that weekend but am working on a wangle so I can turn up there on Saturday night.
Pics of the mods will be up shortly as soon as the insurance pay out for my digi camera which got a little soggy when I drowned my Disco.http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif
Not forgot the video of Stanage but its a little short for a full DVD.

Lewis,
Not quite sure how I came to be going but I'm afraid I'm otherwise engaged on the 28th. Sorry! Our Club is having a three day meeting over the BH period, (Sat., Sun., Mon.) at Coney Green, near Bewdley, and I'm going to that on the 28th. If the laning falls through, you could always come along too.
We could do with some Land Rovers to practice our recovery techniques on!! ;)

If (a) hadn't have happened then I could have come and stopped with my brother who lives in wrexham. However (a) is that I have to get rid of the car that day and the only chance to do it is then, as I'm off the following week.
Just got to work out now if I want to hire a Santana when I'm out in Spain and do a bit of off-roading when I'm out there... It's only $600 euros :D :D :D

Unfortunatly I do not have the route set out on memory-map. I only have it on Fugawi. You guys will just have to track it as we go along.
Before anyone else puts there names down I will need a volunteer to lead a second convoy. Maps will be provided. Otherwise we will have to chop numbers. I will not take more than 5 vehicles in a convoy.

No upsetting locals ! some of them are my customers !!!!!
and they are mighty pi55ed off!
Mainly with a couple of things..
1) gates.... not closing afterwards
2) not sticking to tracks... IMO if a track is really bad avoid it and let it dry.. hence i like rocky ones !)
3) convoys over 8 ! 8 seems to be a number that is getting too much so i was pleased to see we will go in groups of 5.
On the whole farmers understand that they have rights of way and don't mind people off roading so long as they respect the place,
I'm looking forward to it anyway...
any chance of passing through corwen car wash at the end of the day ? helps clean the under carriage ....

What about other makes & models ? Got to be worth an hour round Furbers something has to fit.
Also if I remember correctly there's a place round the back of Mullers that do industrial fixings i.e. Nuts, Bolts etc etc you never know ? Just some ideas

What happened to StrangeRover did the Tappet stop him, anyone know ?

yes he texted me this morning to say he couldnt come cos his engine died.
we did turn left out the pub, and then halfway along there (dad mapreading, me doing about 60mph :D ) we we're unsure if we were going the right direction....
then when we got back to the A5 we went left thinking the LPG station was that way so we ended up going all the way back to McD's before realising and turning round.
we then found the LPG place and the pump was the slowest thing on this planet....it took about 15 mins to put 40 litres in
finally we got going and i was making progress down the A5, didnt take us too long to get home :D

Good set of pics there JJ well done :)
P.S.slightly off topic, but thinking about your V8 setup you'd get better fuel consumption and also a bit more power if you got a cold air feed to those carbs, they'll be pulling in a load of hot air from under the bonnet as they are, it'd be easy to setup a snorkel for it. Also you quiet often see V8's with vent holes in the rear edges of the bonnet to help the heat escape. just a thought ;)

Hi all,
Tappet became big ends !
I loaned my rangie to a mate who fixes trucks for a living, got it back Friday night, while giving him a lift home i hear this tapping noise, my mate tells me it was only a tappet, he fixes trucks so I believe him...
anyway, Saturday morningheading down M57 noise gets louder and i seem down on power.....
End of knowsley express way and i depress the clutch and loose all oil pressure when engine idles and i hear a bang bang bang noise ! and have no power !
so call break down people, and text James.
Car had so little power it stalled driving onto the recovery wagon... so I'm not happy.
Upshot... I have a spare 2.5 TD engine from a transit van which I was going to sell, will now fit it and probably sell rangie....
But now on the look out for a 3 door Disco that i can fit all my bits onto !!
Really disapointed I missed the day !!!!!!!!! and now having seen pictures even more disapointed !!!

To the side of the water dip by the gate on the figure of eight at the back of Llanarmon. Reads 'Riders Deep Ruts'
A horse rider rode her horse into them a while back and she and the horse went over. Silly thing to do really as the depth wasn't known, and the horse could easily have broken a leg. Council were told but have done nothing, so I put the sign up.

Well as a GLASS member I would always respect the Green Lane Code of conduct and I don’t think 5 vehicles in one convoy is a problem. I would certainly not take more than five at any one time. As stated earlier in this thread I was asking for volunteers to help lead a second convoy if more than 5 vehicles turned up. As it was there was only 5 of us and we didn’t meet anyone else all day. Its the people like simply 4x4 who take 7 un experienced off road drivers out at one time that you should be worried about.
Did anyone who came on the trip have a problem with the number of vehicles in the convoy, or feel we was abusing the Green Lane Code Of Conduct?
alankemp
2nd Jun 2005, 19:09
I too am a GLASS member and do not see a problem with 5 vehicles on that particular trip. The lanes were dry and we kept well spaced apart when moving, I dont think we went faster than 8mph whilst off tarmac. As Lewis has said, we saw no other vehicles all day and only 1 pair of walkers who gave a friendly wave. If another vehicle had turned up we would have split into two groups.
Where do we draw the line!!!!!!!!!!!! GLASS say 4 and no more so why the hell is it ok to take 5!!!!
Like I said you cant start making your own rules here. GLASS has drawn a line at 4 vehicles and no more. I have spoken to the GLASS chairman on this very subject when i asked this very question of leeway of group size. So any member who is a member that thinks its ok to take 5 is only contradicting the very rules they agreed to abide to.
I think its also unfair to keep bringing the same old excuse of comercial groups into this. We all know they work in large groups! so why keep using them for a excuse to justify for breaking groups size numbers. Dosnt matter if its 5 or 7 its still over the drawn line!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to rant but I have seen so much bickering about group sizes but it takes the **** when you dont practice what you preech.

2nd Jun 2005, 19:43
i see your point. i have checked the GLASS site and it does say 4 or less. so in future i will only lead in convoys of 4 and if there is more i will split them up.
Pete H
2nd Jun 2005, 21:54
There is no need to go over to the GLASS site to see the code of conduct, its already here on this very forums,at the top of the general Banter section..
When travelling in groups, keep to a small number - ideally four or less. Split larger parties up and either use a different route or allow a good interval to elapse before following.
In my opinion 4 is more than enough for 1 group....
Strange Rover
2nd Jun 2005, 22:33
As a new arrival to off roading I feel I should say something in support of Simply 4x4.
I have wanted to go off road for a while so last November I bought a Range Rover.
I knew that not all lanes I could see had public access as I grew up on a farm in Ireland, but had no idea how to find out where you could and could not go, so I looked on the internet and found links to various off road people... one of which was Simply 4x4.
I tried to find out about lanes on the internet but there is very little information about where you can go off road legaly (well I am stll looking for a list of lanes with public access), its not like you can type in "green lanes in wales" and get a list of places you can go is it ? so I guessed any one doing it commercialy must be doing it legaly, so I went off road with Simply 4x4. At the start of the day he gave a 1 to 1 briefing on eticate namely the importance of driving slow and not spinning wheels, leave the place as you find it, give way to walkers / horses etc. He aven explained that the route could change if it was muddy. I always enjoyed the days out and to be fair they where the least "green" of green lanes, most lanes where gravel type, well used and easy to see.
BUT.. it was during these organised days that I saw the worst abuses of lanes by small groups of 3-4 vehicles. we passed them a couple of times and I saw them leave gates open, cut accross fields etc.
So although I now tend to go off road in a group of 3 - 4 thats because I started with a commercial group and then learned about other web sites from people I met, this lead to better understanding etc and I ended up here !!! ( a nice place I must add)
So which is better... 7 vehicles on known legal routes under some sort of guidance or 4 going abywhere they like at speed ????
I am not a member of GLASS... reason... I'm not sure what its about and do not see much info on their site about where you can go legaly, I'm sure I will get corrected on this point and thats fine I'll know then, but my main point is that its not illegal for groups to go down public access roads and the commercial operators help get people interested in the first place it is from that that a more deeper understanding follows.. isn't that a good thing ?
(not meaning to upset anyone here as these forums have a knack of making things sound wrong)

Reason for group of 5 IMHO.
Splitting up into 4 and 1 is stupid, as is 3 and 2. What happens if one of the pair has a problem and the other cant shift it
I personally think 5 is acceptable (even as GLASS members)
We weren't rushing about and all the ramblers who we met seemed friendly enough.
So you think just because you didnt see anybody all day and all the people you did see was friendly that makes it ok?
I'm sorry but I think this is a poor excuse! Personaly I dont have a problem with groups sizes over 4 but what does wind me up is that everybody is happy to moan about comercial groups running more than 4 (mostly simply 4x4) why is this company name used so much when there are many others operating in north wales in much larger groups of 15+ such as (pro trax) and alike.
I would have to agree with strange rover about simply 4x4 if they was just money grabing and didnt care about safety then why dont we see them operating 15+ in one group.
But getting back to the point! If you are going to abide by the green lane code then do so! Dont change the rules because you think to split 5 up is silly. Maybe u should organize it better next time, so there isnt 5 to split!

We weren't rushing about and all the ramblers who we met seemed friendly enough.
I agree to a point, but also remember the GLASS code of conduct is a list of recommendations and as such non enforceable and sometimes it needs a commen sense interpretation. As has been said before, quite a lot of the time we were well spread out, were nothing but curtious to everyone we met, drove around at very low speeds well below the recommended max 12MPH and hence did not have any problems with anyone.
Now, when I got near home with Deano the two of us detoured down a local Shropshire lane and we got confronted by two angry householders complaining about large groups of 4x4s tearing up "their" lane. Now this lane is less than a mile from my home, it is green and leafy with no obvious signs of vehicular traffic and there was only 2 of us !!! just think what they'd have thought if four had turned up. At the end of the day no matter what the group size (within reason) someone is always going to complain, and me thinks Golly has a different agenda here else why is he so keen to resurect the the commercial issue and then defend them, we've already had this discussion and have agreed its not all of them to me its just an excuse to stir an arguement.
To conclude, yes I agree as much as possible we should endeavour to have groups of no more than 4, but I would also say we need to use our commen sense and ensure the safety & welfare of the people involved.
Thats my 2p, I'll say no more ;)
As I said before when I spoke to the GLASS chairman on this very subject at the LRE show last year he said they weren't willing to go by the term recomendation any more, He also told me they had changed the wording used in the code of conduct. From (When travelling in groups, keep to a small number - ideally four or less) It now reads (When travelling in groups, keep to a small number - four or less)
And to excuse me of bring the comercial subject back up is taking things a bit far as the name 4x4 was used in this thread long before I posted. Personaly I dont have a problem with any comercial groups that operate in a safe manor. But thats just my view. I am not a member of GLASS as I dont agree with all there policies. If you have agreed on its not all of them why keep bringing it up in every other post about north wales.
I think you have hit the nail on the head tho, you cant please everyone and never will.

Maybe u should organize it better next time, so there isnt 5 to split! Personally I think it was very well organised. Originally there was going to be 8 vehicles turning up which is why Mike offered to lead a 2nd convoy if needed.
Well I’m glad we got that sorted. I think we can all agree that in future when I or anyone else organises a day of fun for us all, that we will keep numbers down to 4 or less in a convoy.

Been reading this thread and it looks like you all had a great day.
It's very difficult organising laning days as with all best laid plans people will drop out for a number of reasons it would have been ideal to have two groups, but i can understand why they stayed with a group of 5 ;)
If there had been 6 then two groups would be appropriate I'm a member of GLASS if i had been leading the group i would have done the same.
As someone said if you had split and the two got stuck there would have been problems.
Common sense at the end of the day, i know a couple of lanes in the lakes which take you through woodland used by walkers and horse riders, they have narrow tracks with few pacing places, i would not take more than 2 at a time through them.

It seem to me that you dont like constructive criticism when it is you in the lime light.
I'm not having a go at anyone here, you all appear to be great guys. I was only making the point that people that preach GLASS guidelines should keep to them and not break what they believe in and what they preach to others. The only people that look silly here are the ones that preach it and then break it.
I think we can all end this now as I dont think there is anything more positive to come out of this discussion. We can all see what the issuie was and what went wrong.
No offence was ment to anyone in particular and I apologise if this was the case. :)
Apology accepted mate.
As mentioned before we were expecting 8, some dropped out (cant blame people if their engine dies on the way here (strangerover ;) :p ) and a pair would have been risky on some of those lanes.
If we had had 6 vehicles we would have split up into 2 x3 but unfortuantely we didnt.
Next time come with us mate and make it 6 :p , im sure you would really enjoy a day out into the lovely welsh countryside :)
