Is there any way of knowing who is sending an email before it has been completly downloaded? ( i use Outlook Express)

Some one has sent me a huge email, as as we don't have broadband here, I disconnected after 4MB and 20 minutes!!

I have 3 other emails to download, can I somehow skip the big one and download the other 3????

You need to set outlook to only download headers, this will just collect the message info, who from etc without the whole mail - you can then decide if you want the whole thing downloaded.

As to where the option is....er, i use Outlook, not express but as a guess its in Tools --> Options.

Try http://www.mail2web.com/ & delete it before it tries to come down to you, or you could go to your ISP`s homepage & delete it there.

Thanks, both of you

Searched everywhere in OE and couldn't find how to just download headers, would be a very useful optoon, does anyone know how to do it?

Thanks, madoobri, I never thought to check via the web from home, though I use it regularly when away!! But then, when having a bad morning, nothing goes right (or when the sh1t hits the fan, it goes everywhere!)

the email was 14MB for my wife, she didn't want it so I deleted it without reading it.

Thanks again, I am a happier man for your help, isn't the forum wonderful with guys like you on it?

Glad to help, that happened to me once when someone tried to send me a photo. Problem was it was saved as a BMP instead of a JPEG & it was huge, blocked my mailbox for hours!!

cheers

I use Outlook too, but I just tried Slime's suggestion in Outlook Express, and it only seems to apply to newsgroup messages, not to email ... :dunno:

Thanks, Bernie, glad to know i wasn't being too thick to find it.

Does anyone use an email program that shows only headers?

Outlook Express!!! (and outlook, in fact 99% of mail handling progs)

To use this facility in OE you need to set your acount as an IMAP account, as it doesnt appear to work on POP3 accounts in OE, depending on who provides your e-mail accounts you may or may not be able to do this.

Just so you are reassured, and to make you realise that even though we cant find things like this in Outlook we aren't as daft as some....

I heard this on the radio this morning, from computer helpline operative.

She got a call from a lady who had managed to open Outlook, and even created a new mail, but her question was " I have managed to get the 'a' in the address, but how do you get the wee circle to go around it???"

There's hope for us all.......... :D

I'd stop using Outlook Express all together, download Mozilla Thunderbird and get a solid email client with all the features you might need. and it's free!!

Oh and it's not made by Microsoft!

Link to Thunderbird is: www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird)

I'm sorry to beat the anti-Microsoft drum, but this really is a decent product.

Cheers

IMAP is generally used by web based mail clients (like MS's OWA).

POP3 is more reliable and does offer headers only (infact telnet into a mail server (its wot a mail client really does) and ask for a list, it will display the headers to you!)

my suggestion? get some decent mail software, once again as said by some1 else, i dont want to be the anti-MS person in here but i'll support them when they decide to release some decent software!

try thunderbird or incredimail (as some ppl like all them flashy buttons)

ok as some of you may know I work in tech support for a web host. 99% of all mail probs are operator error. of these the most common generally are caused by inexperienced users being told to ditch programs such as outlook and outlook express and switch to the better alternatives! personally ive never tried to use mozzilla but have dealt with loads of customers who either cant get it to work or can only achieve either send or recieve but not both. Most ISp's offer a webmail service if you dont want to download file then use this. and please stop whinging bout MS yes they aint perfect but if they were not around wed all be using bloody macs.
