Following my previous thread on the problems with my engine high-revs in traffic, my freebie finally came to a grinding halt on Friday morning. Half-way into London stalled and wouldn't restart. After getting it started, courtesy of RAC - who correctly established that my ECU was playing up, I managed to get it it to my mechie in Stevenage. He was outside basking in the glorious sunshine, but I managed to persuade him to have a look at it. He stuck it onto his ECU reader and laughed! The temperature sensor was telling the ECU that it was - 3 deg C outside, so had my choke fully open (explains the recent petrol guzzling). Also, the drive shaft sensor wasn't reading at all. Basically, my ECU was under the assumption that there wasn't an engine in my car, so was working of its default reference values - very strange ones at that! Hopefully, once they arrive it will be back to normal.
Symptoms - running very hot, fan comes on after 5 minutes, engine keeps over-revving when slowing down after a bit of distance. Cause - knackered sensors.

Sounds like the freebie might be a proper Land Rover afterall with the amount of times they break down:D At least a series vehicle is cheaper to fix and has more class about it though.

wild story! no wonder bush mechanics have no hope with em. mine has been polite enough to keep its dummy-spits close to home. straight after a loaded up to the windows expedition 2 weekends ago where i've had to back up and hit the big hill climbs faster so you don't smoke the clutch to get out, my battery died in my carport. wish I had a video of my missus' eyes or tits as we bounced and spun out of that one. No low range means it's a rally car gentlemen so give it some, after walking the approach: all is good if you keep the herbs up:D it has surprised us, turned in its own length, and is good for 180 kph+ loaded from a fugn 1.8 unaspirated. and you look dead sexy.<10 litres/100k's even flyin confidently in the wet. AND I'll race any defender....there, I said it.
