The rear cross member of my 90 (1993 vintage) is suffering quite bad surface rust... I have already tried rubbing down, treating with Kurust (or similar) and painting with a couple of coats of Hammerite but within a couple of months the rust starts to re-appear.
What can I use to strip the paint back to bare metal and rust treat, also is there an alternative to Hammerite??

The problem that you both have is called "lack of maintenance" and is found on all Land Rovers with drivers who prefer to drive the beasts rather than look after them (and lazy ******s like me). It can be cured by a large wire brush applied vigorously to the affected parts, then painting with Kurust or similar and then a good quality paint. Alternatively, a VERY thick coat (or several thin ones) of Hammerite will hide all the nastiness until you can afford to have the affected part replaced at a garage.
There is an alternative to Hammerite, it's called galvanising - but its a ****** to do as it involves taking all the other bits (such as bdywork, engine, axles, wiring etc. off).
There is a guy that advertises in the Mags that will do it all for you, but as Greg is a Scot and Mark is a tight git, I can't see this guy being used.
Hope the suggestions help,
Uncle Alan.:D

Dont worry Mark. At least all the oil thats leaked on the front half of the chassis will be keeping the front half rust free.:p :D
