I own a 1986 ex MOD 90 which came with these strange fittings to the back body. Through the EMLRA I have been able to ascertain that my car was with the RAF for nine years. It was originally a soft top. Two interpretations have been advanced for these fittings: a) they were used to fit a high visinbility/ emergency flag for running around an airfield, b) a staff mounted beacon for the same purpose. What do you think? Thank you for any suggestion.

This is the photograph. I did not manage to post it with my original message. Sorry. Let's hope I'll be luckier this time.

This may be relevant......
When I was in South Africa working in one of the opencast sites, all vehicles had to have a 3 metre pole with a flag on (bakkie whip) so that the Euclids could see them when they were close, could be something similar. They were called that 'cos pickups are called bakkies out there.
