View Full Version : Lightweights - yes or no!?!

The chance has arisen for me to purchase a ligtweight for £600. It's been off the road since '96, but has been started regularly, and aside from a bit of moss on the roof, the chassis and engine seem sound. My plan would be to remove the body, clean up the chassis, new seals, pipes and fluids in the engine, maybe a new wiring loom if it needs it, and then rebuild it to pretty much its original military condition.
So should I take the plunge and start a restoration project, or do I buy a house and get a mortgage?!? I am prepared to put in some hard work over the summer. I have a 90 CSW at the moment which I would keep - I would get a canvas for the Lightweight and keep it for summer days.
Anyone have any experience in restoring lightweights?
Nik.

Get the Lightweight and make sure the house you buy has a garage / shed large enough to take the Lightweight.

The guy accepted £450 for it, and I am going to attempt to move it into my drive on Friday!
I will soon be posting all sorts of questions when I get stuck! First thing is removing the body.

First remove the body. Flog the chassis, motor, gearboxes, axles, and wheels, then cut some bits out the middle of a 90 chassis, leave the axles there and drop in a 4.6V8 with auto. Fit the body back on and you will be able to seriously **** off the local Gti brigade. Come and try mine first! :D Just ask Mark!!!

So far things are going well. The doors and footwells aren't up to much though.

It all adds to the character "they" say. Just make sure that your lass doen't fall through. There are fewer things guaranteed to lose more brownie points and start the "that goes" scenario than the tart falling through the floor or a draught up the gusset.:D

Funny you should mention doors! I've got a brand new pair of door bottoms, complete with hinges, seals and locks still in their MoD boxes. They certainly won't fit my 101! Interested?

Lightweights are the most fun LR around, although my son (3,5yo) nowadays INSISTS that I shut his door properly..the time it swung open (he was strapped in, fortunately) he was NOT impressed..
Has anybody ever managed to get the doortops to adjust to the windscreen without breaking things? Or should I just keep wearing my furry hat in winter?

NAH, that's not a leak, that's my weather reporting system!:D
Saw a rerun of "Frost" featuring a MP Lightweight with slanted sliding windows. Was that ever a feature on LW's or was it made up by the props dept.?

Maybe had doortops from a later MoD 90/110??
You see the odd one fitted out like this.

My Series 3 Lightweight had 90 / 110 door tops fitted by MoD, sometime before 1993 as I have a photograph taken that year of it with the 90 / 100 tops fitted. Had no problems with vegetation growing in the runners and have both panes slide was useful. Wish I got that latter feature on my 101!

I would quite like to put the later door tops in my Lt/Wt but since I would have to sell the Lt/Wt to be able to afford the door tops it's a bit pointless!!! ;) :) :D
