I want to do this as an expedition, my brother is out there for 3 years on business, and i would love to do this and go see him. I would also like to be able to do some off roading in the Malaysian jungle.
The only trouble is i don't know how to plan a route, the atlases i have are rubbish and don't have many roads on, so something online would be good if someone could direct me in the right direction.
Oh and i will be looking to do it in a Landy, wither 90 or most probably 110!!

Take your time in the planning though. Decide which comes first, uni and such, or the expadition.
I myself am wanting to do an expedition sometime too in a Land Rover, in the next 10 years I hope too! And obviously, Otu will not be up to the job. :p
How many LPG/Petrol stations are there usually, and is the fuel good enough for a standard 110 V8? lol

Yeah that what i'm hoping for, one awesome holiday in a lovely Landy...but of course i'm not too sure if i will be able to do it. He is only out there for 3 years so by the time i finish my apperenticeship he will be coming back, but hopefully by then they might off him a good contract where he can stay over there for a while longer...he works for MAN the truck people and he is the Malaysian MD's right hand man!! So you never know i might be able to go!!

Thanks Bernie.
Want to get a route planned first of all of course...then get a landy and find out all the stuff to get there and that.
Just been told by my dad, who used to work for an international company that it used to take the lorry drives at his work 3 weeks to get to Iran...so i'm looking for about 2 months!! and he also says the biggest problem will be going through Burma!

If i'm not mistaken there was an article in LR Enthusisast or LRO where they travelled from Europe to Asia passing Kuala Lumpur. (defenders).
Do it in time for the Malaysian RFC. Dont forget the pics!

hehe, i saw in one of the mags that someone was in Iran and they said everyone was friendly!! i'm in the process of planning it, just working out what i want for it hehe. Thinking of getting a roof tent and camping out instead of spending money on hotels and that! oh and scorpion 2" lift, with tubular winch bumper with some form of driving lamps for the desert and mountain roads at night! all in good time!!

Dew1911 and Jjsaul have now been recurited!! They want to trek to Malaysia with me in 3 landys, one me and James are looking for either a 300/200tdi hardtop 110, and Dew wants a 109 hard top, hes gonna put a toyota engine in.

8th Jun 2005, 18:43
You mean truck right? :p
Probably a Defender, 200/300TDi. Depends what is best overall. Because you need to be able to fix things fairly well with what you have if you break down in the middle of a looooong track.

Of course! Defender would probably be the best option that I can think of... and that would be a 200/300TDi, anything newer than that would probably be a little too electronically sofisticated.

Check last month's LROi Mag, there's a section on a Rangie race/expedition with roof rack, tents, GPS e.t.c. kitted out on them. Very nice stuff.
Dew1911
9th Jun 2005, 06:07
I think the shape of the Rangie wouldn't help, not as much storage space ect...
Just been told by my dad, who used to work for an international company that it used to take the lorry drives at his work 3 weeks to get to Iran...so i'm looking for about 2 months!! and he also says the biggest problem will be going through Burma!
I think he's right on both counts. I went to Nepal a few years ago (8 to be exact). It took us 3 weeks to get to Iran, but we did dawdle a bit in Turkey. Iran was fantastic, the people were lovely and the lack of tourists (especially americans;) ) was ace. We took 3 months to get to Nepal but we weren't hurrying.
From there we looked at going to Singapore but Burma was a bit of a non starter. Even getting to the Indian side of the border was going to be unlikely, and I don't thnk things have changed much. We then researched going north out of Nepal into Tibet and China before dropping down into Laos. It should be possible but the Chinese have issues with foreigners, especially ones with their own transport. IIRC they wanted to send a "guide" in their own jeep (plus driver) which we would have had to pay for. We gave up at that point.
Good luck anyway, it's a hell of an experience - one I still grin about regularly:)

Thanks billh, i am going to have to research Burma, i hope that i will be able to go through, if i can't i will have to look at going through China! But then again still a bit dodgy.
Graham, thanks, i know most of the M6 (up untill junction 8 - M5 hehe) as i used to do that regularly.
Oh and Steel, as long as the others don't mind then yeah should be fine!! Oh No more recruites!!
And if needs be i can probably steel a T4 from the workshop at work to take along with us!! if you need one for a TD4 or newer!! I also suggest diesel as i can't be bothered messing around with an overheated V8!! Sorry
If you need any support in my region I'll be happy to help out (might even get LR pakistan to sponsor you while your vehicles while you are here). Also you are more than welcome to stay at one of my houses (depending on which region of pakistan you cross).
While you are in my area food & drink (including alcohol) is on me. Email me when you decide when to come and i'll make the arrangements (as well as forwarding you my contact numbers).
This offer is open to any member of this forum at any time (as long as i'm in the country - which is usually all the time:D )
Hope this helps you plan your route a bit better.
I've got friends in iran, turkey & the middle east so if I can get them to get off their backsides i'm sure they'll help you out in their regions as well.
BTW - anyone who is planning such a trip should take out at least a few days so I can arrange excursions & parties.

Have made a list of a countries i think i will need to go through, not quite certian yet; going to try to contact some embassy's to find out if we will need permits.
Starting in the UK (Picking people up either on the way, or make a meeting point),
Belgium,
Germany,
Austria,
Italy,
Slovenia,
Bosnia and Herzegrovina,
Seriba and Monterengro,
Bulgaria,
Turkey,
Iran,
Pakistan, week break with Storm,
India,
Bangladesh,
China,
Laos,
Thailand, then finally,
Malaysia.
I have thought of trying to get some people to sponser us, and maybe having more people if i can get enough sponser's. I was thinking i could get sponsership from Land Rover themselves, and i should be able to go through the inside as i'll be an apprenticeship.
You might have noticed i have detoured Burma as my dad said its a closed country, so i've got no chance of getting through!

Slovenia: mostly trouble free
Serbia: mostly trouble free, take care in south
Macedonia: mostly trouble free
Turkey: take care in areas
Iran: Advise against all but essential travel
Pakistan: Advise against all travel
India: Advise against all travel to Kashmir and North East
Bangladesh: Advise aganst all but essential travel
Burma: Landmines... Hate brits... Nuff sed...

I must admit it's the middle eastern areas that would freak me the most... Can imagine it'd be dangerous for white Britons in some of them.

...that's where I come in.
BTW - if you head through the north of pakistan (Peshawar to Islamabad) & iran, you'll be able to cross into india from the famous Lahore border (and get to watch the opening & closing of the borders (it's a sight worth watching, they antagonise each other like hell - but it's all choreographed, nothing serious).
I'll speak to a couple of friends in Iran and India to see if they can provide you with a bit of support while you are there.
Regardless of what you do, you'll need a break by the time you get here, good to see you are taking a week off. Just make sure you stay in contact in case you need any parts (i'm sure Land Rover Pakistan can arrange that kind of stuff quickly for me - the head guys are all ex-army and love expeditions).

I must admit it's the middle eastern areas that would freak me the most... Can imagine it'd be dangerous for white Britons in some of them.
I wouldn't be too concerned, when we went (admittedly before the recent Bush/Blair adventure) the Iranians and Pakistanis were the most hospitable people we met. We found the Iranians had very little time for their government's posturing, and while large parts of Pakistan are pretty lawless we encountered nothing but hospitality.
JamesD
10th Jun 2005, 13:57
yes i have experienced nothing but hospitality from the people of the middle east but i also went before blair and bush's field day there and im not so sure about our welcomeness in some areas...
it'll definitely be a once in a lifetime experience...
luckily i dont stay white for long and after a few weeks in the sun i go darker than my best mate, who is an arab from syria whoc migrated here about 5 years ago... the same one that says that i look like an afghan... cheers mam ;)
morag will be fine for the job with some careful packing both on the roofrack and inside. might even have to put one of the spares on the side ala army vehicles - not sure yet.
was thinking about what we will need and i quite like the idea of a dual diesel tank which would mean that it's approx 800miles between fillups. of course this will be useful in the areas with no stations (fuel is dirt cheap in turkey and iran so that'll be an ideal place to fill both tanks!)
only problem with dual tanks is where to fit the second tank on a 90. could put it under the passenger seat but that means relocating the batteries (2 of them) which is a bit of a faff. They could go under the bonnet but im not keen on that.
as for the language barriers. is it worth learning any languages before we go?
Dew1911
10th Jun 2005, 15:06
nah, we'll just use internation sign language.

Rich_P
10th Jun 2005, 16:17
I do suggest though, that we do all go in similair vehicles. For instance, stick to the 300TDi for example, for repairability issues that may arise. As the military also like to use the same engines and stuff.
Means that we won't have to bring along the same number of random spares for differant engines!
It will also likely take about 5 years of planning anyway for the thing to be "sorted"...

Hopefully we won't have any repairablity diffulcitys as i will have my apprenticeship under my belt and i am going to see if i can get offical LR sponsership, so they should be able to get us some spares and what not.
If anyone has anything that they might think will stop them being able to get into a country, PM or e-mail me with it and as i am going to get onto all the embassys i will check if it will be ok, unless you would find it easier to do it yourself.

Whoa, seems like alot has happened over the weekend. Good to see so much enthusiasm. I just wanted to point out that in this region (iran, pakistan, afghanistan, india, china, malasia etc) the 200TDi only came for a short stint while the 300TDi is stil in production and spares are readily available.
Also like that link stated local mechanics can "fix" anything (sometimes better than new) but Landrover PK will obviously do a better job. I can always get the "official" mechanics to come to my house so you can get the work done while you chill in the pool with a cold beer (remember alcohol is forbidden here:eek: ).
It's good to see you guys are taking your time planning this trip out and not rushing into it. Hopefully i'll still have my landy by then (already looking into getting a Range Rover Sport) but regardless, the offer is always open to anyone on this site at any time (at least while i'm alive:D ). Still it'll give my son some time to grow up and maybe i'll join you guys from border to border.
Let me know if you guys need anything from my side.

I was thinking maybe the Diesel out of the Nissan Patrol Nissan Patrols are dead in the water over here, the Land cruiser is the preffered Diesel Jeep of the UN. The patrol is only used in the middle east, but the sheikhs of UAE all have (armoured) G-Wagens and Defender 110's.

No problem with the Union Jack, worst thing which would happen is that people would take pictures (just make sure they don't mistake your Landys for military vehicles (they might think we're getting invaded:D ). Just in case I'll arrange a couple of Pakistani Flags as well.
BTW - If you guys want me to arrange some sort of "expedition" decals do tell me. I can get them done here at a fraction of the cost. I was thinking about an outline (Europe & asia) map or something and then a list of all the countries you'll be visiting. Maybe a couple of dot's to mark your route as you go along. Or perhaps something like the Paris-Dakkar ones. Let me know.
Cocky Lil Guy
13th Jun 2005, 09:20
I thought that 300TDi's were the best thing to go for, i don't think i'll have too much problems fixing anything as by then i'll be a trained LR mechanic, i'll just need to be able to get the parts.
Thanks to James S i am now thinking of a Range Rover Classic with 300tdi and manual g'box probably 5 speed. But i might still go for a 110 Hardtop 300tdi.
Storm
13th Jun 2005, 09:21
(sorry for the multiple posts) you guys should also think about perhaps buying a Landy from here. I could have a word with the people at Land Rover and see if they can arrange a couple of 300TDi's tax free so you could eventually take them back to the UK - just a thought, not too sure about type approval/MOT/etc.. though. Will look into it if anyone is interested.

Storm... you couldn't do us a favour and see if the old ferry between pakistan and the UAE or Saudi still runs with cars on it for us pleas. We're just looking at different routes to get to you... The route through Iran looks like it may be threatened by Mr Bush... :(

There are ships running back and forth between Dubai and Karachi (port bin qasim) all the time. You just have to get on a ship and get over here. I think it's a good idea to skip bush's playground but a word of advice, when driving from karachi to Islamabad try making the trip during light and stop for no one. "That there be bandit country at night".

yeah im not too keen on going through iran... specially seeing as bush now has them sandwiched by afghanistan and iraq! hopefully we will have diplomatic immunity in Syria so we should be ok there.
do you know who operates the shipping? cant find anything on the net.
as for karachi - islammabad how long will it take us and is it safe to sleep outside? looking at the map we could do the distance in 2 days but it depends upon the roads i suppose.

Main issue, Dom and JJ may have vehicles up to it (or will be able to afford one), but I am not in such a position for quite a while. Plus other things, so I don't know if anything has come to it. Dew was puting in a lot of input into it, until it turned out he was some little kid who's several months younger than myself.... :(
So yeah, not much happend on the topic since.

now now... theres no need to be *****y about things! in many ways dew was actually a lot more mature than many other people, just let himself down sometimes.
So is Dew still going????

5th May 2006, 14:38
When you hit the reply buttona nd get your reply box, if you scroll down, you see a second box just below, titled Additional Options, in that box you will find a button marked Manage Attachments, click on that and it gives a pop up, which then lets you up load pictures from your computer.
The forum software does not allow you to post pictures direct from other websites, as somethimes you can accidently end up with a loop, picture posted from another forum which is then post back ont he original forum and then back again... what happens is both sites then end up running far to slow... :)
