:(
hi again,

after blowing the head gasket several weeks ago i fitted an brand new head from turner engineering. only problem is that it now stuggles to start when the engine is cold. i put an old set of glow plugs in that i know where ok and also put a new battery on. when it does start there is a lot of diesel smoke out of the exhaust. the engine starts perfectly when warm or hot so i don't think its a compression problem. would anyone have any ideas?

many thanks Craig

Either the injectors are loosing their fuel supply after standing (air getting into the fuel pipes) or the injection pump timing isn't spot on?

thanks,

tried a piece of clear tubing between the no.1 injector return and the pump. there is a small amount of fuel next to the injector union and the pump union but air in the rest of the pipe. the braided pipe that connects the injectors is not in the best condition and was wondering if this was allowing air in.

It could well be.
Replacing those pipes is both cheap and quick.
So try that first.

hi again,

when the ignition is turned on the fuel stop solenoid sounds like a noisy set of tappets, should it be quiet once it is energised. not sure if this is allowing fuel back into the tank by not closing properly.
any assistance would be greatly accepted.

Would this also apply to a 2.5TD engine on a 110? I have a similar problem on cold starts.

Cheers

Sorry Craig, I missed your question.
Some injection pumps have an advance solenoid that clicks rapidly for a few seconds prior or during start-up. This may be the noise you can hear. However, the stop-solenoid should just click once. Check the connection to the solenoid, ideally remove the connector and clean with sandpaper.

Yes it could, but there are a lot of other things it could be to.

Diesel hard starting tests:
1 visual check of all fuel pipes, especially rubber sections these can perish and crack allowing air in
2 check the glowplugs, remove the wires to each plug and check their resistance with a multi-meter. Also check supply voltage 12v+ for approx 10seconds
3 check the valve clearances, this can affect valve timing from cold.
4 engine timing, using the manual, check it is spot on
5 replace the fuel return pipes from the injectors
6 replace fuel filter and seals
7 compression test,
7 specialist required at this point to check for tiny air leaks in fuel pipes or fault within injection pump

;) many thanks guys,

I have replaced the braided hoses between the injectors and the fuel return hose to the pump. fingers crossed, all seems fine. Started no problem this morning. when i disconnected the stop solenoid i could still hear the noise so its not that. Can i just say a big thankyou too all.:D

many thanks Craig
