I'm sure that this must have been discussed many times but I did a Thread search and could not find anything, so my apologies and here goes....!
I am going to change tyres soon on Disco II for the winter. What do you suggest that will be good on road, good in snow, occasional muddy field with 2 ton horsetrailer on back, but not too noisy. I know the perfect tyre has not been invented yet, but what do you think would be a good compromise. What about the Goodyear MT/R tyre http://eu.goodyear.com/home_en/images/hero_wrengler_mtr_tcm67-1999.jpg used on the G4 Discos, or do you think that it is a bit heavy?

I have no personal knowledge on them, but I believe BF Goodrich AT's are supposed to be the mutts nutts...
I don't think you'd benefit from MT's unless you do a lot of mud-plugging.

I have had General Grabers A/T on two of my past Landy's I found them spot on for both mub, snow & sand. Like you I was taking horses to various events and shows.

I did pretty similar stuff to you in my Defender, and couldn't fault the BFG MTs - got us through some very nasty stuff indeed :) I didn't have problems with them on wet roads, but I odn;t exactly throw my landies around ... if you were concerned about road manners I'd suggest BFG ATs, but they won't be quite so good in the snow and muddy stuff

I'm rapidly approaching renewal time too.
In past threads, the Pirellis got a negative comment or two for being too hard/slippy - which would mirror my experience with their car tyres which seem to be biased towards good mileage.
After doing some poking around, the BFG ATs sounded very good - A friend of mine had BFG muds on his Shogun, found them just a touch too slippy on road in the wet, however swears by the A/Ts, which apparently are not noticably different to road tyres unless you're pushing really hard in the wet - and he doesn't hang about on road!
They're reputed to last a long time too.
He does use it off-road quite a bit so has compared it with other owners' tyre brands.
One catch - If you're running 255/55 profile, they don't make the tyres to fit, although rumour has it they will be soon.

I have bfg At's on my d2 (245/70 16), they are fantastic, although i would have got bfg mt's if I had realised in time that the disco isnt really any faster than my 110 was  that had bfg mt's and the peace of mind knowing you will get through the most ridiculous looking muddy bogs, plus I had no issues on road and I didnt hang about in my 110 ;) For the all rounder though, BFG AT'S are the clear winner, 50k miles is expected wear time :) imho :)

Orgie, thanks for the info on Tyres. Was your 110 a Td5? And it was just as fast as the Discovery? What about noise levels and handling? I was thinking of perhaps going back to a Defender,(The Discovery is going to get messed up). Hmmmmm, Maybe I can keep the Discovery, too!!!!:D

BFG AT's are great!
Always had them on my past 3 Land Rovers, Never had a puncture, never wore them out and never been stuck...... yet!
Got my last set from a place called 4x4 Accessories and Tyres at Leeming Bar for £82 plus the VAT.

Thanks all for the advice. I'll think about it as advice is divided:rolleyes:. I suppose it depends what my priorities REALLy are , not just what I'd like to see on the motor!!

Thanks folks, I will put AT on all round. I will have to make up my mind as to the tyre make when I get round to changing them.

I had a 2003 110 td5 and it flew :D LR told me that for that year the bhp had been increased (better ecu values), I was able to hit 160kph on the michelin 7.50 4x4 tyres that were standard fitment and then with the bfg mt's I could do 140kph no prob, never tried flat out as I only did that the once to see what it was capable of :D My disco is 2001, cant adjust the ecu values and they were being set lower in 2001
the 110 was very noisy compared to my disco, but it was actually quite quiet compared to older defenders or series, I did put a lot of soundproofing in there, but the mt's made some extra noise, but not much and really only while the tyres were new, once they had done 2k they didnt really make any difference inside the cab.. I doubt I would hear them in my d2 :D
