Now I'm no expert by far on this, but it could be simply something to do with the contacts on the back of the dash.
Remove the dash, clean the contacts up and such, reassemble and refit. Then again, it could be something else...
Which Disco model is it? Disco 1, 2 or 3? What engine is it?
As far as I know, it wouldn't be the alternator otherwise other problems would occur, mainly battery charging issues! It might be the coil that is faulty or something. Again, I am not an expert by far!!! Just try to take note, and ask about.

Aye, probably is. If the rev counter goes up and down, and there's power loss, check the Turbocharger hoses!
Also, try to listen for any abnormal noises compared to before things went wrong with the power loss and rev counter.
I suspect either Turbo problems, or a simple pressure hose has developed a hole or has collapsed internally.

Had this problem myself i am sure that itis one of the small wires grey or white on the back of the alternator. The conection was loose behind the plastic cover, cleaned it up and made sure the nut was tight and has been good ever since. This is a cure for a eratic needle on the rev counter if the engine revs up and down like a yoyo thats a different matter altogether

I've been wondering about the same, or similar problem with the 97 Disco Tdi I got two weeks ago. I first noticed the problem about 130km into a 190km trip, on the first bumpy road. One of the wires on the alternator seemed loose, and wiggling it seems to have been a temporary fix. This was reported to the dealer who looked at it in the post pre-delivery service service, who replaced the offending wire. Strangely, it's now better but not gone completely. The problem also only seems to develop after about 100km of driving.
I'll have a better look at all these connections soon as well. Any guides as to which connections to look at. I'm waiting for a workshop manual, but this seems to have to be imported from the UK (which FWIW is less trouble than driving 60km to Johannesburg to a place that might have one.)
