I'm having the windows tinted in the next week or so and looking at my options.

I will be leaving the windscreen and drivers and passengers door well alone due to the legislation.

I am considering either a light tint on the rear doors backwards or a light tint on the rear doors and a darker tint on all the windows behind these.

Anyone seen the second option on a diisco? Any ideas?

Cheers. Shrek

You can tint all windows, apart from the 3 front windows, thats the, windscreen and the passenger and drivers windows(side),the windows rear of those you can do as you like...As you say.

Ive seen this done on Disco's and it looks ok,the darker the better ;)

As dark as you are comforable with all the way round the back.

The tint I'm considering (if it means anything to anyone) is leaving the front door windows at the manufacturers 12% (land rover customer services were very helpful and rang me back with this in 10 mins), the rear door windows at 42% (30% plus the manufactures 12%) and the all the windows behind this at 62% (50% and the manufacturers 12%).

Hi shrek, Don't know anything about tints, but is it common to have two different levels of tint on different windows? I can see why you would, but won't it look nicer to have them all the same? or doesn't it really show up that much?

Hi Bernie

I'm pondering it because I have had an mpv with quite dark windows before. Fine in the summer but too dark for the kids in the winter. But I also like the dark for security and wondered whether this might be a compromise. Never seen it and wondered if anyone else has as I am concerned on the looks.

Window tinting is very popular here in Australia for obvious reasons. The darker tints look very good and does add to the security. You can have all but the front windscreen tinted here. I have never seen different shades of tint on a vehicle.

On the subject, I might have a go at applying some tint from Halfords at the weekend. I've been told that its quite easy and I have a mate who has offered to help, he's got a high quality squeegee which is apparently useful. Is it worth even trying the alpine windows or are they too much hassle? Is it likely to look a bit home made?

Sorry for the thread hijack - thought it was relevant!

Hi,
I did mine for the Tunisia trip, 95% on all rear windows. It is difficult to get a good finish when doing it yourself with windows in, so I took mine out.
Use the best quality tint that you can afford, mine cost about £40 for all round. Dont try thr alpines first, you'll give up on the rest without even trying them.
Best ones to do first (for the sake of confidence) are the rear door windows as they only curve one way. Next are the rear, side load space, and finally the rear screen, with, of course, the heater element.
In the end I paid £10 for each alpine to be done, off the car, and they did a first job.
Use plenty of soapy water from a spray, it will dry out, and maybe a hair dryer, I didn't find the hair dryer much use, but it can help to "shrink" the creases out on a double curve.

I've done some enquiries today.
Called several places who turned out to be mobile fitters from the back of a transit van  . The safari windows were a problem for these as cutting was an issue.
Then called one who has a dedicated workshop. Went down to check it out.
Anyway, once inside I was amazed. Totally clean, dust free environment and an office with a pc connected to a cutting machine. The guy dialled in my disco and up came all the patterns for cutting. He also does offices, main dealer cars and the local art gallery.

I've looked at his work and took the advice from him and this thread.
Decided to go for dark on all the rear windows and the sunroofs. :shadecool

Having them fitted Friday.

Thanks. Shrek

Ive just seen this post as ive been unavailable for a few days, If you want to have a look at Discos there are a few in my gallery just search for Discovery. As for % of tint it depends on the amount of glass in the vehicle and also the colour of the interior. If you were to put 20% (stops 80% of light) film on a saxo with black interior it would be quite dark, A Disco has a lot of glass therefore more light entering the vehicle, if it had a beige interior you would have to fit 5% film to get the same effect as the saxo. Either way most of the films on the market cut out 60% of the heat and 99% of UV light. As for price £250 is quite fair. If you need anymore info then please call, the numbers are on the site.

Thanks Gary

I had a look at your website (very good) earlier in the week which helped a lot. :)
It's good to get confirmation of the advice I've had and that the price is fair.
I'm going for 20% in the end. I do have black leather but with the amount of windows and sunroofs hope it's not going to be too dark.
Booked in for 9.30 tommorow. :)

Try giving O E Sunshades (www.oesunshades.com (http://www.oesunshades.com)) a look, would get around the problem of being too dark in winter, heard good things from the guys over at Disco3.co.uk.

There are several that have been done around my way and it looks really good. A couple of the nicest I've seen had tint to match the body colour, one was green the other blue which looked cool.

Had the windows on my Transit van tinted, done it myself with soapy water and a credit card, dead easy. Bought the film from local car shop for about £15. Problem with tint is reversing of a night, can't see ****** all behind you.

Sorry to hi-jack, but I couldn`t resist.9When you went to Tunisia, did you have vehicle insurance from your own UK insurer, or did you buy Tunisia insurance (to meet legal requirements) at the border? Will be taking my TD5 later this year, having "done" Morocco a few years ago, but my own insurance company (Privilege) has told my butler that they won`t cover Tunisia, and same applies for all the other companies my butler has spoken to. Be grateful to hear how you arranged things. THANKS

Sorry to crash in on this topic.......I`ve been a bit vexed trying to get info on vehicle insurance for Tunisia, and I see you`ve been. I`m with Privilege, and they have told my butler that they won`t cover Tunisia (not even for the legal minimum), same story with all others I¬ve tried so far. Have read it is possible to arrange cover on arrival, which in my case will be at Tunis port. Did you do this, or did you have Tunisia cover from your own insurer? Be very grateful to hear from you. Doing the trip in a TD5, having "done" Morocco two years ago in an elderly Disco Td1, I mean Tdi. The company insuring that one has stopped doing any cover for Africa. Be interested to hear what you did about insurance.

Thank you very much
Shag
