View Full Version : Soft hoses to intercooler

Hi all,

Was having a bit of a poke around under the bonnet at the weekend and noticed that the hoses between my intercooler and turbo seem a bit soft. There seems to be a stiffer section where the feed from the EGR meets the hose, but the bit that connects to the intercooler, and the bit that connects to the turbo, seems to be designed to expand under pressure.

I was under the impression that one of the reasons that people fit silicon hoses was to *stop* them expanding? SHould I think about silicon hoses, what with the intercooler upgrade imminent? How much do they cost?

Cheers.

hi m8, not sure about fitting silicon to stop expanding, might be true, but iirc its about the smoothness, hence better airflow ;) And I believe they dont collapse internally like standard ones do eventually.

George, you really don't want your hoses expanding under pressure, it'll produce lag in the response from the turbo. In addition the expansion of the hose will eventually put pressure on the jubilee type clips holding it in place and cause them to fail (ask me how I know!!).
I replaced mine with Allisport ones (bought at a good price off eBay - Allisport actually sell their own stuff on there now). If you don't want to run to the price of silicon hoses then LR did bring out a heavier duty version of their own IIRC.

Mine does seem to suffer terrible lag when off-boost, even worse when the ACs blowing. Might investigate the silicon option. Thanks!

Doesn't that seem a bit much for a couple of hoses??

The small rubber hose that joins bottom of inter-cooler to metal pipe, it's about 3" long, costs £20 ish from LR.

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses so far. I just found this on eBay and wondered whether, in light of the relatively soft hoses that I have found on the car, this would be a good purchase: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4558779938. I would ideally like silicone hoses but I'm not willing to spend £80 on them!

I guess I would also buy the EGR blanking plate and remove the EGR, as I don't particularly like the idea of the engine breathing exhaust fumes.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
