I want to convert my V8i Disco to gas.. Is there a preferable system or are they all the same. ?.. I'm getting £1500 to £2100 quotes to convert.

John,

Don't really know much about it, as I haven't bothered to get mine done.

What configuration are you thinking of?

Petrol tank replacement, or twin tanks in the sills, or both? (internal is not an option IMHO)

Make sure what ever system you go for, it has the bits to stop blow back to the air filter box.

There is a LPG forum somewhere, I'll see if I can find the link.

Failing that, ask the same question on the other forums:

OK I don't know the British legal requirements, but the technical stuff is pretty simple.
We've got two Stage Ones, are just converting the second one. Mine has been on LPG AND petrol for 7 years.
You need:
#1 gas evapourator (We've got a Tartarini and a Lovato, which are Italian and comparatively cheap, that was £200)
#2 Tank. Take at least 60 litres, so that you have left 48 (EC requirements are that you can't fill more than 80%)
Don't put it UNDER the Land Rover. It is legal here, but completely stupid as an off-road hazard. And leave at least one petrol tank. Because ther are hardly any LPG stations in Spain, Germany and Switzerland. Even in some parts of the UK looking for LPG on a weekend can be challenging. £100 2nd hand £300 for a laarge new tank.
#3 2 LPG adaptors for your 2 V8 carbs. These can come in 2 shapes, in the worst case count £150 for the pair.
#4 filler plug and valve. Again, put these somewhat high above the ground. Half a days work and £50.
#5 switches, relais hoses and pipes.
The rest is some involved piping which shouldn't take you longer than a weekend.
Have fun and save lotsa money. Here LPG is a THIRD of the price of petrol.

Annette,

John has a V8i, so has no carbs. He also has lots of electrickery, and CATS with sensors, and don't think that this is as easy an installation as a carb model.

The reason the tanks only hold 80% useable fuel is that LPG is only liguid under pressure (or if it is very cold), and will revert to its gaseous state if the pressure is removed.
If you have a 60l tank that you think is empty, actually contains 60l of PG (Petroleum Gas) as it has reverted to its natural state at STP, and as there is no pressure in the tank, the fuel can not be delivered.

As far as underslung tanks being an offroad liability, if you can damage one while offroading then you must be doing something really daft, and in the case of the petrol tank replacement option, which is between the chassis legs, you have more chance of rupturing a petrol tank (which is not a pressure vessel).

I know people that have both conversions, and if you intend to get in the rough stuff, sill tanks may reduce the ground clearance.

The best option IMHO is to replace the petrol tank with gas tanks, and have another petrol tank put up in the rear wing (near filler), IIRC they put one in that holds about 8 gallons.

Unfortunately, you will find this the most expensive, as it is the tidiest option.

Gas conversion is great on this. Costs around £1200 for simple system, £2000 for injection. Halves cost of driving. Can recommend good converter in South West if that's where you are. Underslung tanks give range of about 160 miles but leave full petrol capacity.

My first post in these here forums, like to say hi to all :)

We have just purchased a '96 Disco V8i ES already converted.

It has dual underslung tanks, one either side near sills. We get about 170 miles between refills on motorway journeys, 110-120 just normal stuff.

Tanks seem to take about 60-65 litres to fill it costing about £22

had a Jeep Cherokee with lpg conversion prior to this, it was an in boot model and left very little space for actually storing things
