View Full Version : Discovery 2004 2a "Vibration"
Disco Td5

Hello People !
My Disco has a vibration that starts around 105 klm per hour and gets worse if I accelerate from this to 112 klm per hour .
I am running 18 inch wheels with Goodyear Wrangler HP tyres .
The wheels have been balanced twice - and Goodyear have replaced three out of five tyres that were out of round then rebalanced wheels again but the vibration persists .
The vibration is through the entire vehicle and not just the steering .
Any Ideas ?
Anyone else heard of this problem with Disco 2a's ?
Thank's in advance ,
Disco .

Have you done any off-roading in the Disco?
I ask, just in case there is any mud stuck to the front or rear propshafts.
If the rear propshaft is out of balance (like the wheels) you can get quite a vibration in the car which can be felt through the seat of your pants.
Inspect the propshafts for mud, loss of the original balance weights (normally small squares welded on in strategic places), and play in the U/Js.
I had my prop shaft replaced cause I was getting a clunking sound the rubbers had seized and the uni joint cracked.
They said if they replace the uni the prop shaft had to be balanced or the car would vibrate.
I was cheeper to buy the whole lot.
Hope that helps

Thank's for the replys People !!
The Disco has been through some serious mud trails - but is cleaned very well after every trip and there are no mud build up's on the drive shaft .
I should also point out that this vibration has been felt since the vehicle was almost new .
I spent the first 2000 klms - running in - at a max speed of 80 klm p/hr .
Then once I started to increase the running in period speeds to 90/100/110 klm p/hr the vibration problem was starting to show it's head .
The vibration is now apparent on all different types of freeway surfaces - and at the same speeds - so it is not generic to the 'type' of road surface it is driven on .
Maybe - - An out of balance drive shaft - fitted as new from the Factory ????
Or maybe the engine mounts ??
Please Help me if you can ??
All the best ,
Fred .

Do you know anyone with similar wheels to yourself or even any Disco2 actually.
I'd swop the wheels completely from another vehicle, this will eliminate any possibility of a wheel related problem.
If vibration is still there, then it needs to go back to the dealer as the problem s drivetrain related and should be sorted by them. As the next logical step would be to replace rear&front propshafts, then rear&front driveshafts. If fault is still evident, the only place it could be is the transmission or transfer box.
Mind you, the one I drove some time ago, had an odd vibration that I put down to the uneven-ness of the 5 cylinder engine at certain revs. This occured around 100kmh and almost felt like a slight misfire, but is actually a characteristic of the vehicle apparently!
I must add, it was very slight and most people may not notice, but years doing Fords NVH diagnostics makes me listen for every bump/knock and scrape when road testing cars!
I'm running goodyear wrangler HP's on 18" rims on a 2004 disco with no problems.
No other vibrations or uneven-ness on the engine at that speed either.
Sounds like a job for the dealer.

check your Rotors as well, they may be warped. If you drive for an extended period of time, and suddenly plow into some cold mud, your rotors will certainly not like it...i speak from experience.
You say the vibrations have worsened, this also happened with mine after they became warped. I drove it for a week since the day the warping happened. At first the vibrations were only present during braking, and by the end f the week, the vibrations were always there.

Thankyou shanno ! - - and all you other fella's for your input !
I was beginning to feel like this problem was 'unique' to my Disco .
Land Rover Australia have checked the complete front end including the swivel pin adjustments - front tie and steering rod adjustments - and the front wheel alignment .
They adjusted the wheel alignment - - and now the vehicle is pulling to the left and the steering wheel is always pointing to the right to keep the vehicle straight on normal driving surfaces . ( sound familiar shanno ? )
I purchased some 1996 P38 Range Rover Alloy Rims - 16x8
( same backset as the original Disco rims )
Then fitted a set of BFG Mud Terrain Tyres - 255/70 R16's for my 'Off Road' adventures .
The vibration is 'Non-Apparent' - with these wheels and tyres fitted travelling down the freeway , so the dealer came to the conclusion that it must be the original wheels and tyres that are the problem .
After 3 wheel balances and three new tyres - the problem persists .
I think that the secondary wheel and tyre set up is only " Masking " the real problem withe the drivetrain of the vehicle - ie - more rubber between the road and the vehicle which tends to soak up all the bumps and vibrations in general .
This is a virtually 'new' vehicle so you can imagine the frustration I am feeling in trying to get it sorted .
Next step is 'Back to the Dealer' - Again !!!!!!!!! - - Argh!!!!!!!!!!!
Any further advice would be appreciated !
Thank's
Fred .

Are Disco's must be twins mate long lost relatives lol
identical problems if you get any joy let us all know, mine is going in the dealer ship in the next few weeks,so if i have joy with them ill let u know

I found this and wondered if these dampers were the problem. No idea what they are but thought it might be worth checking.
Shrek
What are those "donut" things on the side of the front and rear differentials?
Those are harmonic dampers, designed to absorb excessive vibration and noise produced by the differentials. They are held on by a wire cable. If the bolt is removed, or they are broken off, they will hang and bang. Total removal of them will result in more drivetrain vibration, although it is not extremely noticable. The biggest difference is supposedly to the pinion itself, which will absorb more abuse without this "protection".

Shanno - Thanks for that !
I will keep you informed on how I go with my next visit to the Dealer .
Which will be some time next week .
I have also heard of another Disco in Melbourne Aust. that had the same problem with the vibrations .
They replaced the rear drive shaft twice ( twice ???? - why twice ???? )
This fixed the problem !! - - But no details on the how or why were reported .
Keep Smil'in ,

" Update " on the vibration problems with my Disco 2A -
The vehicle went back to the Dealer last week and was road tested on freeway conditions by the Service Manager of the Dealer I purchased the vehicle from .
Then was road tested with 'myself' and the 'Service Manager' the following day so there would be 'no mistake' in the exact vibration problems with the vehicle .
The vehicle was in the workshop for three days - with all the possible causes checked out ( including all the items you fella's suggested ) and then road tested again .
The Service Manager phoned me late on day three - to say I am right to pick up my vehicle - so I picked it up on day three .
The vibrations are exactly the same - with no change whatsoever !!
I then made a complaint to " Land Rover Customer Care " - Australia .
Their 'attitude' , was that if the vehicle has been checked by the Service Manager of the Dealer I purchased the vehicle from - and the vehicle is at this point in time - shows no fault or deviation from factory specifications then they are not prepared to do any more investigation on the vehicles problems . This Department should be re-named " Customer - We don't Care" .
This treatment by Land Rover - Australia - is totally un-acceptable !!
My new Discovery 2004 2A - Has serious vibration problems at highway speeds
and Land Rover Australia have put it into the " Too Hard Basket " .
With no customer satisfaction .
