View Full Version : Chirping Wheels?

Hello all,

I have a US Version 1997 Disco I SD, with 104K miles on it.
And she has a bizarre problem.

I hear what sounds like chirping coming from underneath the vehicle when in motion. It seems to be related to the rotation of the drivetrain, as the faster I drive, the more frequent the chirping.

However, when I brake, the sound disappears entirely.
Has anyone had this happen before, and if so, what fixed it?

Of note: The brakes are entirely new, rotors, calipers, and all, and I have looked at the prop shafts. No sign of wear, or rust, if that helps......

Thank you!

How do mate from across the pond? :p

Right I have a similar chirpping that comes and goes, but when it happens it is speed dependant and from the front wheels and when braking it stops!

What I have tracked it down to so far is the brake disc guard that is on the outside of the disc. It must get pushed on to the brake disc occassionally by air flowing over it! I have waggled it and it seems to have stopped for now!

Crawl underneath and check that nowt is loose and that the guard cannot touch the disc!

Guard is number 2 in the picture below!

Let us know how you get on!

When was the last time you greased the UJs?

I haven't greased the UJ's....just bought it about a year ago....I may try that.....but I would think that it wouldn't quit when braking?

Thanks for the help guys. Nice to know my UK people are still much friendlier than most Americans

They are not under load then. Just an idea.

I'll have to check that out. I was thinking maybe the same thing about the prop shaft as well.

Hoping for the mud guards, though. Free and easy :)

hi nice to see another new member good luck with the defender.
I have a 90 and I found a rear brake pad sticking slightly in the carrier and sticking slightly to the roter (brake disk)

It's a Disco, but thank you. I wish I had a Defender, but they cost a fortune here in the US, due to the import restrictions/modifications. List for a 2000 90 is around 35,000 GBP.
