Land Rover will no longer get any more orders from the police force for new Range Rovers. The end of the contract has come, and the police force are sick of all the electrical failures on them. Mechanically and engine wise, the beasts are fine, but they say that the other things are what go wrong too often to be useful to the police.

So now, the police are going to be getting BMW X5s....

The Mets special escort group are still getting Range Rovers.
The Met tested B*W X5's for general traffic use but they were unreliable and couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding. They currently use Mitsubishi Shoguns for general traffic use but rumour is that they are going back to Land Rover because Mitsubishi are not being very helpful when it comes to modifying vehicles to police spec.

Hmm, you sure on this, the last i herd the police were still very pleased with the rangies performance, nothing else comes close for motorway patrols where they need speed, stability, and of course the 4wd ability for removing the unfortunate and idiotic from crash barriers.

Well round here they've started buying RS6s, so I guess the Rangie is out.

Does this mean they'll be selling off the ex-police ones?

It still depends on which force though as to who buys what as i believe they all have independant budgets, so it could just be Greater Manchester that are dumping them Steel.

(Oh by the way fella, Britain's 2nd city is still Birmingham, no matter how hard Manchester would like to pretend otherwise;))

I saw a fair number of police vehicles North of the Border last week  , there were a few RRs about, and a couple of S3 Discos but by and large the majority of 4x4 in use were Shoguns.

Our own Force were offered a new RR on trial several years ago, but in true RR fashion it could pass anything except a fuel pump!

The new Shogun is equally fast and responsive, and has more interior room, better fuel economy, and much beter reliability than the Td5 Discos they replaced.

I haven't heard about this... I work with GMP and know some of the guys in traffic, I'll ask them if I see them this week. One cool fact I do know is that the Rangies the armed response lads use have ballisticly armoured doors so they can hide behind them in siege situations :D.

They were pleased with it all apart from the electronics, such as cabin electronics most likely.

This is from someone who has contacts in the Police Force though, too! The Force is taking their last order of Rangies, and supposedly will be going for the BMW X5 instead.

As was explained before, there is no "the Police Force", there are dozens. Manchester police may be dropping it, but others aren't.

Lothian and Borders seem to have a mix, a shogun, a merc, a couple of 110's and I have seen a new Disco 3 too...

All I will say is, GM Police will be really dissappointed with the BMW X5 as a Police vehicle.. would have thought they would have gone for the merc..

It was because they could get them cheap. Much cheaper, meaning less £££ being spent on the vehicle purchase. Another sign that the Force is underfunded... isn't it?

I understand they did/do have mercs, tho me being white van man, travel extensivly the M60 (Mcr orbital motorway)i have been seeing old bill using Range rovers more than ever, would be a shame to see X5s replacing them.

Wouldn't have thought the X5 would have the carrying capacity of the Rangie either?? The Range Rovers down here carry not an incoonsiderable amount of kit in them.

Almost everything in the public sector is, none more so than defense.

Well similar to Sandy M, I spotted a lot of Police vehicles up here last week. And I was really surprised that the mix. (but no 322s!)

I saw - VW Toerags, Volvo XC90, Shoguns, 110's, Freelanders, a few of the Armour plated 110s (like the old RUC used to have) ... and I wish I had my camera a row of about 10-15 D3's all parked in a line ... looked like it was armed response units that were using them, but that might just have been for "the event"

i was working at g8 and the northern constabulary certainly has a new rangie, which they were cruising about in. glad to see the police force being frugal as ever.

some mi6 folk were using a p38 rangie

i also got to see the million dollar chevy suburban that follows the mr bush about in all of his motorcades. the guy i was chatting to was a bit reluctant to disclose any information about it.

cant see much info on the internet about it alas, not too sure what it is called.

They probably wanted to keep that bit of info a bit quiet

GMP especially. They have more work to do per officer than any other force in the country. That is why they recently had project 8000 to try and get more officers to join up.

It's also why they're closing all the canteens :(...
