Three of us are thinking of going to Morroco/North Africa next year. My 110, a Disco and maybe another Defender or a Freeloader.
What prep would I need on the Defender? I have been reading/websites and have come up with this:
Roof rack
Roof tent
Roof lightbar
Diff guards
Snorkel
Dog guard
Water cans
Fuel cans
Split charge
Deep cycle battery
Air compressor for tyres
Hi lift jack
Cooker
Fridge
Extra internal lighting
Air Con?
Even more sound proofing!!
I already have GPS, Steering Guard, Light Guards, Front Spots, Large security box.
Thanks for any help.

A bolted down toolbox carrying a goood selection of stuff
Sand ladders/waffles
big first aid kit
more water cans
I'm doing a similar thing and have done (or am doing) all the above, plus: winch, extended breathers, extra power points, long range fuel tank (but not cheap), water filter/pump and I've built a platform in the back from plywood so we can kip in there if needs be.
Oh and a tank guard. (The list is endless:D )

As above,
but: you might want to look at uprated suspension (shocks / springs) if you go offroading with a lot of weight in the back, and one always seems to have a lot of weight in the back...
Also: Rema tip / top tyre repair kit, shovel or spade, jack base plate (hilift is only so much use if you are jacking the jack deeper into the mud instead of the car up)
One of the most practical mods is actually a water tank built in - you get one for the left rear fender, holds about 45 liters and frees up interior space plus gets the weight down lower (c of g), external tap and hey presto super for washing your hands, brushing teeth, etc.
Also go for a set of fender tops, as these will be used as a table or additional step onto the roofrack.
The list is endless, like billh said.

Already got uprated suspension :D
By fender tops do you mean Chequer plate on the wings?? As I already have this, and will also fit a bonnet protector.
Do you need water purification or is water obtainable??
I saw a disco at Peterboroungh last year that had the water tank in the rear footwells.
Is a hand winch more use than a electric one?

Fender tops = chequer plate on wings.
Don't know about water purification needs up there - we seldomly use it here, but then we are about 6000 km away.
I would not go for a hand winch. If you've got more than one vehicle, carry some kinetic recovery straps and hilift jacks and you should be able to get where you want to be.
If you want a winch, by all means get one, but I don't like the extra weight in front and the spending loads of cash for something that you will use once or twice a year - if it's only for recovery. If you use it for something else as well, it might be worth your while (fishing / hunting / construction / farming / etc.).
Do you need water purification or is water obtainable???
AFAIK it's mostly available, depending how far off the beaten track you're going. We've just decided not to take any chances.

We're going with a hand winch as a)We're hoping not to use it that much:rolleyes: and b)You can use it front and rear (not to mention sideways).

Hand winch to haul a landy about?? I'd say more weight than a bumper mounted one and a collection of strops an pulleys to rig side on or rearwards.
If that bothers you get a demountable but If more than one truck going you have a recovery vehicle too, just get a kinetic rope.

Wussies. I went in '96 in a D reg Golf with no winches nor chequer plates.
Dis a bit of off roading too ;)
Keep that list coming though, I keep dreaming about doing Maroc again but am older now so more paranoid and would like to be prepared.

Forget the fuel tanks guys fuel stations are all over the place. You dont need a winch unles your going to go real crazy mad, take something to carry some water or take a good few bottles if your going to play in the sand.
Last year I did 9,700 km going to Morocco abd back the only thing that needed fixing was the shock absorbers bushes on the rear shocks.
If your camping make it comfortable but dont go over the top, hotels are cheap as chips and beer (if you can find it) is about the same price as in Europe)
have fun Morocco is a great country. Were off to Tunisia in a few weeks though wish I were going to Morocco again.

[QUOTE=Astbury]Forget the fuel tanks guys fuel stations are all over the place. You dont need a winch unles your going to go real crazy mad, take something to carry some water or take a good few bottles if your going to play in the sand. Asbury Spot on mate, when we visited Moroc many many years back we went with a sensible amount of equipment, some spares, water food enough just to give one good meal and a breaky each day. We fitted nothing to the basic 90 cept a good bloody fan from truckstop. The trip was into the Atlas and up as far as Oukameden ski resort. The weather at night was Baltic and during the day unbearable heat. All this fitting of lights and thousands of pounds worth of gear is just over the top in most instances. A good month under the vehicle beforehand pays dividends not forgetting your Five Star Cover and your Duvet Cover
First time I went in a bog standard Disco with two spare wheels and normal camping gear - no snags at all. The last three times in the Defender have seen the addition and expense of many 'nice to have' gadgets and equipment most of which were never used. Keep it basic and save your dosh. After all, the locals get by great in the desert/on the tracks in their Renault 4s.

A few spare parts,
Half shafts, belts, a wheel bearing, trackrod ends, a role of gaffer tape and a big bag of zip ties :D
Antshybrid will tell you a story about being stuck with a busted truck in Morocco with no spares

Lots of fuel available and water in 2l sealed bottles. Take some 'gifts' like Marlboro, tshirts and pens. They can help you glide thru some situations, offer a fag and let them take the packet, don't openly offer the packet! Pens and shirts are good for kids to 'watch' your vehicle if you park up, refuse their offer to look after it and it may be scratched, only happened to us once.
Propshaft UJs would be good to take. Roof mounted shower attachment is good on the rack. Waffles worth it for sand, as is reducing your tyre pressures before attempting dunes.
