View Full Version : Problems with multi function module

Just completed a engine rebuild along with fitting service ex gearbox & transfer case.
Had trouble starting the engine, found no injector pump stop solenoid signal, ran power direct from the battery + and the engine started OK much to my relief. Did not at any time short out the stop solenoid wire to ground during the engine removing or refitting.

Checked out the circuit in my manual and it seemed fairly simple, wrong! the service manual made no mention of the multi function module (eventually found behind the fuse box) the internet told me what the black box actually was from the part #

Talked to Rovacraft in Perth, they said that the MFM did not give much trouble and that there was a test sequence that could be carried out to test it. The MFM passed the test OK but I knew that the stop solenoid signal came directly from the MFM and after checking that battery + power applied to the signal wire behind the fuse box (same pin that plugs into the MFM) powered up the stop solenoid OK I knew that there was not any problem with the wire. Also double checked with a jumper lead the engine earth connection.

At this stage I was receiving a signal at the stop solenoid wire but this signal current was not high enough to active the solenoid however as long as the wire was on the stop solenoid the MFM would pass the test sequence OK but not when the wire was removed. (this signal was so low it would not even activate an relay which requires only a miliamp signal)

Open up the MFM and found a bad solder joint, repaired this and refitted the MFM, now I have a better signal at the stop solenoid but still not enough to activate the solenoid but OK for a relay.

Can run the engine of this relay but the MFM will not pass it's test and it will not read the signal from the engine oil pressure switch or run the glow plugs.

I am in the process of getting a new MFM along with a new stop solenoid (may be drawing too much current)

Hope I'm not going on too long with this? probably am!
Would like to see a wiring schmatic or any more data on this MFM and if anyone is interested I can describe the test sequence for the MFM, this multi function module has a hand in many of the electrical circuits in the vehicle.

Thanks for any info received, I'm of to the UK tomorrow for a months holiday, John2005
