Apologies if this is a daft question but...

What is the benefit of fitting one of these ?, and more importantly why is the EGR Valve there in the first place if its not needed ?

Cheers

The EGR Valve is more of an emissions thing.... it recirculates some of the Exhaust gasses back intot the combustion chamber/ air intake.

This has been explained elsewhere by some of the more technically minded .. but basically reduces some emissions however is not a legal requirement in the UK.
Blank it off and you will benefit by a few horsepower .. but also increased reliability as eventually they do tend to fail .. especially for those that do frequent short journeys at low speeds ( ie in town.)

They tend to gum up and cause worse emissions in the end once off get better BHP due to no more hot air lower 02 getting into combustion chamber.

A bit on them here (http://www.loske.org/html/dusty/300tdi/egr/egr.htm)

The question Ben Greenroyd didn't ask was; 'Is this un-necessary valve also fitted to the TD5? Because I, like Ben, have a TD5 and would also remove such a dubious bit of kit, but the very interesting explanation refered to the 300Tdi.

Roger,
Yes, they are fitted to TD5's, and yes, you can get blanking plates for them as well. I have done mine. No noticeable incrrease in power to be honest, but I am safe with the knowledge that my engine isn't being gunged up.

I put the link up as it showed so pictures. On the subject of the TD5 the Discovery Td5s that is sold in South Africa used the EU2 spec, but since 2003 the EGR has not been installed. The manifold now has a blanking plate and a coupling straight to the intercooler pipe instead of the EGR valve.

I believe the dealer can supply the part or Bell Auto Services (http://www.bellautoservices.co.uk/) sell the blanking kit for £45+ p&p.

what do you do with the vacuum pipe that is disconeccted from the valve ??
do you just plug it?:(

You could blank it off. But better to replace the pipe with a standard one .

hi vinnie

i think you misunderstand me,
the egr valve is actuated by mean of a small (5mm) vacuum pipe, when you remove the valve body completely and replace the main pipe to the inlet manifold this will leave you with a piece of disconnected 5mm vacuum pipe.

what i wanted to know is what to do with this 5mm vacuum pipe, do i just plug that??

i hope my description is a little clearer..
