View Full Version : Heavy Duty Rear Spring Advice for +2" lift
Ok - situation - Disco 1 with 235/85/16 and was bought with ProComp +2" Springs and Shocks.
Due to the larger wheels rubbing the inside top of the rear wheel arches I fitted +2" bump stops - but think I now need to fit heavier duty springs as it seems to bottom out far to easily (very easily)???
What would people recommend for HD +2" springs?
Front seems to be OK, I also tow quite often so guess uprated springs would help here as well?
I know that I have reduced articulation by the longer bump stops - whats the best compromise? I am unlikely to often need max ariculation.
Thanks in advance.

Hi mate, faced a very similar problem on my discovery after i fitted a +2" kit to it, i found it bottomed out very easily, the solution i came up with was to fit a double rear damper kit to the vehicle from bearmach, you get 2 brackets to weld to the axle case and 2 brackets which need to be drilled and bolted through the chassis rear of the spring, i believe its the same setup that was used on the camel trophy discoverys. its not a hard job to do but you will need access to a heavy duty mig welder for the 6mm thick brackets. i'll post some pictures later.
since fitting this setup to my discovery i find it much more complient and less inclined to bottom out on me. there is a thread i put on here a while ago about this. i think the kit was about £60 not including the extra 2 dampers you would need.
Anything else i can help with just drop me a line.

Interesting Jarrod. I too, am looking forward to the pics. Does that setup have an effect on articulation? If so, how much?
.... and there was me thinking I could get away with some HD +2" springs.....
Hmmm - was keen to keep it relatively normal without welding etc.

i have the britpart +2 yellow springs and 265/75 tyres and they dont rub. The springs have not bottomed out at all, i have the 2" lift with 100kg load which have a load rating of 300-340lb per inch these are progressive springs so the more compression the stiffer the spring becomes. they also do a 2" lift spring with 200kg load and a load rating of 360lb per inch.

i have had these springs on now for 8 months and they are performing very well i think they have done better than prevoius lift springs we have used.

If you get OME springs, get them matched so you don't have the famous "Disco lean." Matched as in both LH or both RH.
OK - can anyone point me in the right direction for part numbers and or prices?
Interested to see what the springs would cost - progressive seems like the way to go.
Thanks for advice so far.

mine cost £50 a pair from paddocks
DA4204, REAR RRC/Disco1/90, 2" lift with 100kg load, 300-340 lbs/inch
DA4205, REAR RRC/Disco1/90, 2" lift with 200kg load, 360 lbs/inch
OK - looks as though it may be time to flex the plastic!
Whats the common advice - because I occaisionally tow a heavy trailer - go for the heavier load springs?
Thanks

Just to add my little bit.
I bought some "HD, no lift rear springs" when I fitted them they dropped the rear lower than before, I took them off and sent them back.
I wasn't sure how to move forward on this subject so left it alone.
Once we had fitted the roof tent (at the rear) and other heavy additions the back had dropped, so I had to start looking again.
I found a website, one of the up market companies, that listed the wire size that the springs were made of, seemed logical to me, so I measured the wire size of mine. Once I had a wire thickness of 17mm to use as a benchmark I could determine whether a particular spring was indeed "heavy duty".
I finally decided on some 2" lift with +100kg (19mm wire), the alternative was +200kg, from Brookwell Supplies, Bovey Tracey, Devon. These were adequate on the dunes in the Sahara with 4 people and a full load up, including 3 x 20ltr jerry cans of diesel. I'm not saying they didn't touch the bump stops, it was hard to tell most of the time, but once home with most of the weight removed, the car still looks good and drives well. I have never noticed a lean to either side on mine.
One consequence of fitting these and charging around the dunes is that the rear chassis and spring mounts have been badly ripped apart. Along the middle of the chassis there is a weld, I can now put a thin blade up through this for the best part of 2 feet on either side. Now it has to be said that this is ultimately caused by rust, but worth a thought nevertheless.
Welding is to commence shortly using 2mm plate in preparation for this year's return trip.
Thought this may add something useful.

Kevin - spoke to Brookwell this am - they had some HD Blue ones but thought they would be too hard.
They recommended finding out what others with +2" and 235/85 were using (or loose the tall tyres!) - so anyone out there got any more suggestions??
Other quotes so far:
Bearmach - 2 x BA 2100 Heavy Duty Blue Springs @ £55.00 + vat (a pair) = £64.63 a pair.
Discoparts - Old Man Emu 762 Rear 300-340 lb/in Heavy Duty (220lbs) +2" @ £64.62 inc VAT each = £129.24 a pair.
Anyone know of a cheaper OME source??

my 200TDi runs on 235/85/16 tyres, never touches the top on the inner wheel arch...
I use Scorpion Racing +2" kit and standard bump stops.... in fact I have one bump stop missing ! and other than the tyres sometimes catching the rear of the wheel arch....
I also have +2" shocks from scorpion and use the standard old brake lines... no problems front or rear....
Maybe you get what you pay for.. Scorpion are not cheap grant it but I have no problems with bump stops etc.....
good luck...
Strange Rover - do you know what the spring rating was??
Anyone else know if the Britpart spings are 19mm?
Thanks

Sorry no idea,
I explained what I was doing with it, what I was likely to carry off road normaly i.e. loads of stuff for getting stuck and passengers and explained I was fitting a husky winch... they provided the stuff, and from other peoples cars I know with lift kits I deffo have a 2" lift over factory which is about 3" more than pre-lift as the old springs where shot.. i.e. tired.....

Spot the difference between standard and modified.
Lift front Procomp +2" with Monroe gasshock. Rear Britpart Heavy Duty +40 mm with Sachs gasshocks and front and rear.
