My Auto Disco that was stuck in third gear now has its full compliment of gears and transmission features. The dealer (CRCars of Four Marks) took it in and offered me a loaner for work, saying; 'their electronic/electrical genius would be available'. They only had it for one day and 'the genius' found the intermittent fault, although not without some difficulty if I read the body language right. It turns out that many of the control signals and drives for the gearbox are earthed to the chassis at a single point on the top of the gearbox and under the centre console. Either the bolt was coming loose or there was some sort of fracture, but either way the earth path was unable to sink enough current to ground the signals. So, the fix was easy but the diagnosis was less so.
