I have enjoyed this forum for some time (read only) but the time has come for my first post and show stopper problem.

I have a 1994 Diesel Discovery, not my main vehicle, just used for pottering about that seems to have a show stopper type problem. Last weekend I was turning right when there was a faint noise from I think underneath the front off side wheel, like I had driven over a plastic bottle.I Immediatly lost all forward and reverse movement.

I managed to park up safely. and the RAC recovered it for me.

So now the obvious question

Any one have any ideas?

The engine still runs fine and there is no oil loss.

I am not a mechanic, so please be gentle

Regards

John

Could be a number of things, first thing to check though is driveshafts, simple check, put engine in gear and then put the diff lock on and see if you can move forward, (use low ratio as well,) If you move with the diff lock on, then a drive shaft has gone.
Easy to fix, and realatively cheap.

Check the rubber coupling on thr rear prop to rear diff, easy to do just look under the back, it can just brake up or just rip the middle out so have a good look :(

Hi,
I had this happen to me...

a described earlier..
try engaging diff lock and see if you can drive,
if so you have something up in the axle, Half Shaft/CV joint but easy to fix and using 2nd hand bits cheap too!

Wow

Thanks for all your help with this.

With Diff lock engaged, it works, and I have been able to park it up on my drive a bit better.

Is it ok to drive on the road in this mode, I live around 5 miles from the local land rover garage (Hollands)

Unless any one in Staffordshie wants to fix it (Cash)
Regards
