We have the original radio cassette in the Discovery we have just bought, but it isn't wired up. There is just a mass of wires under the center console, so don't know where to start
Can anyone tell me what wires I need to connect to what please.
My three year old is starting to crack up as he is being forced to listen to my singing.
Cheers

Mass of wires sounds like someone has cut the old connector off, probably to fit a third party stereo.
I believe that the Haynes manual lists the colours of the wires and what they do, howver you'll need a connecter from another landrover to connect the wires to the radio (which will probably already have some wires coming out the back). I can't remember if the Disco has an ISO connecter on the radio (a trip to Halfrauds with the radio would confirm).

It doesn't look like the ISO has been cut off the back of the unit. There are 5 wires comming straight out the back which are about 6" long. I can post some photos if that would be any help.

Sure, I'm looking behind my radio soon and will do the same.

Looking at picture 3 it looks like the ISO connecter has been cut off the loom, which is a shame (that's why you've got all the bullet connectors in there)
I can tell you that the right most lead in that lot is the aerial lead (that's probably not a lot of help), for the rest you may well end up having to take a multimeter and a battery to.
I've a '97 300 TDi so my wiring is likely to be different to yours, and if someone's cut the ISO connector off there's a chance that the wires may be different / custom (those long blue and brown leads look like they're custom rather than OE fitment). Once I'm reunited with my Haynes BoL I'll see if I can get the official wiring from there.
Looking at the radio I'm a little surprised by the leads coming out the back of the radio. I can't recall any loose leads like that, so it may be that the radio's been opened up and those leads connected in directly for some reason (maybe a problem with the ISO connector on the back of the radio, may have been used in another vehicle).
Generally, by convension, red is taken to be live and black earth but having just done the radio in my Cavalier I know that's not always the case (black in that was the ignition +).
Just noticed this thread in the 'How do I do this' section from jasper110 http://www.landrovernet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37593 where amos has posted this link http://www.clubknowledge.com/Car_Audio_FAQ/?t36 which may help a bit.

Holy mother of all things bodged! Oh hun thats a heck of a mess! Shoot the previous owner someone! If I were you I would start over and re connect an iso connector to them there wires! making sure it is all souldered and heat-shrinked. Get rid of those aweful crimp on bullet connectors! Yuk!
Of course you will have to work out where all the wires go first which may be a pain in the rear end, but once it is done it is done and safe!
Are all the wires different colours? some might be pairs of colours (speaker wires)!
Sorry, pet hate of mine is bodged electrics and crimp-on connectors!

Why is it we always have problems with electrics? it's the one thing we are hopeless at!!
The only wires that seem to match up to the ones on the back of the unit are the 2 long wires on the right of the 3rd picture, but as you can see they are doubled up to a second wire. Did wonder if these may be speaker wires.
I thought it a bit strange that there were wires coming from the back of the unit as well as the plugs. It is possible that they could have been added due to a problem with the plugs.
The wires coming from the back of the unit are, blue/green, red/green (these are the ones I think are for the speakers, brown/yellow, blue and black. I would presume the blue to be live and the black earth, as to the brown/yellow, that's anyones guess.
Will have to have a look at the wires in the loom and see if anything is in pairs.

Right then, here's a full list of the wires in the loom.....21 in total!!
1 red/green
1 blue and 1 black (taped together)
1 blue and 1 brown/yellow (also taped together)
The above are the long wires on the left of photo 3.
1 black/white
1 black
1 black/yellow
1 black/pink
1 black/orange
1 black/green
1 black/blue
1 red/black
1 black/red
1 black/brown
1 black and 1 red (these 2 are insulated together properly)
1 purple/white
2 blue/yellow

Jen, to the right of the wires coming out of the unit in the pic there is a black bit! is that just a blank piece of plastic or does it have any connections in? Just can't make it out and want to check!

From the Haynes book of lies
1 blue and 1 black (taped together)
Blue = Vol +
Black = common or earth
1 blue and 1 brown/yellow (also taped together)
Brown / Yellow = Vol -
Blue = Vol +
1 red/green = LMU button ^
I suspect these are not OE loom but some third party thing, so ignore them for the moment
The above are the long wires on the left of photo 3.
1 black = earth
1 black/yellow = Left Rear speeker
1 black/orange = Left Rear speeker
1 black/green = Right Rear speeker
1 black/blue = Right Rear speeker
1 black/pink = Left Front speeker
1 black/red = Left Front speeker
1 black/brown = Right Front speeker
1 black/white = Right Front speeker
2 blue/yellow = Subwoofer (rear door speeker)
1 red/black = Lights
1 purple/white = 12V live permanent (fused)
1 orange/ white = Ignition live
1 black and 1 red (these 2 are insulated together properly)
This one concerns me. Black is registered as earth but there is not a red on the diagram at all.
Hope that helps.

Wow, thanks for that guys, that really is a great help!!
The black bit you can see Geo is the ISO plug sockets, hubby has had a dig around and found an ISO plug that he got from a scrappie a while back, so with the list that Turbine has given us we should be ok. With the unidentified wire we will just tape it up seperately, and lose it!!
Thanks again guys, as usual youhave been great

Just to let you know everything is now fitted and working. The long wires from the back of the unit were for the remote control buttons on the dash. Thanks once more for all the advice.

Lucky ******. I had absolutely no wires at all where my stereo was meant to be. Had to wire the whole lot up myself. It works which is a miracle. Not bad for a first attempt.
