G'day All,
I've got an oil loss problem happening with my 300tdi - approx 1 litre per 1000km. The oil seems to be exiting via the engine breather, then into the air line into turbo, then into intercooler pipe and out a weep at the lowest point in the intercooler ducting, then blows back in the fan breeze onto nearly everything. Some is probably also going right through the intercooler and being burned. This is the 2nd time I've had this problem - the 1st time ended badly with a blown head gasket that allowed firing compression into the engine body (blew from a pot to a pushrod chamber). I elected at the time to have a new head installed (professionally) to give myself the best chance of avoiding a repeat performance. That was only around 15,000km ago (10,000Mile). Anyway, I'm worried it is about to happen again.
Today I took off the rocker cover and contemplated adding a bit of extra torque to the head bolts by giving them an extra 1/6 turn each. I know this against the rules - the head gasket and bolts are designed for single torque down - but I reckoned I didn't have a lot to lose given the recent symptoms. I've never done this sort of thing before and essentially piked out when push came to shove because the bolts were already very tight. I did, however, apply the spanner to each bolt in the correct order, and found them to be off the scale on my tension wrench without budging them. That is until I hit around bolt 10, which moved. 2 or 3 bolts later, another one moved, the 2 bolts that moved being adjacent to each other. In each case, I tightened them until they felt like the rest (ie bloody tight), which took around 1/6 turn each. None of the rest of the bolts moved after that. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this? Any other cures for my problem apart from selling the thing?
Thanks,
Brendan
