http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1819000,00.html

I for one hope so as I get really fed up with the mild winters we keep having down south....a bit of snow would do me a treat :D

Well we hear this every year, but I'm with you in the hope that it really is coming this time

the past ten winters had such ridiculously mild weather that even an average British winter will come as a rude shock
And that is also very true, how many people have passed their driving test in the last ten years and are yet to drive in snow?
Most of them!!!:D

Ahhh you dont need to be trained to drive in snow, like london, they drive the same as a non a hot dry day!!!!!!!!!!(above statement sadi sarcsticaly)Cheers

i will have passed my test 10 years ago next week , and have driven in snow (couple of feet deep) every winter since , driven in a citron ax , nova , corsa my ex series 3 , and my 300 bhp evo 6 (although its brakes lock up just as soon as you think of braking ! )

so we still get some snow , i live in north wales , overlooking the cheshire planes , and liverpool , and shewsbury direction , on top of a hill , its possable for us to have a foot of snow and the neighbouring villiage 2 miles away down hill will have no snow at all !:D

Mmm it`s a topical subject aint it. I mean you can make a statement about the weather and before you know it you are bombarded with facts to the contrary. Our memories aren`t to be trusted with weather facts. My wifes driving test got cancelled twice in Paisley cos of snow and that was only 3yrs ago. Snow doesn`t lie much in Scotland at sea level and our yearly ave temp is 8 degrees. We tend to remember the bad winters when we were kids
and the one I remember was 63. It seemed we were sledging for years then and that is what sticks in your mind. Likewise the heatwave of 76......Wonder what the Global Warming crowd would have made of that one.....................The end of the World is nigh..Take up thy semi detached and run to the hills. Don`t think the weather affects us the same unless of course you are working in it but we have more comforts to combat it now with central heating, internet, big shopping malls. endless tv video and of course cheap flights to the sun.........and.. The Pub. Bring on the Winter.

It's amusing how much panic buying goes on, from the thought of a fuel or power strike to no bread or sugar in the shops within 48hrs. Me I'm lucky, we have hibernation instincts. He bakes the bread, makes the jam in summer & every other bug a comes round to eat it.. so adding that missing warmth.

There's only one bunch to blame for an energy crisis and that's Phoney Tony's crowd. So quick to stop all nuclear power generation development now they are importing electricity from France. Makes you feel good doesn't it.

AlexNo your thinking of the tv being out of action back in the days when I had a memory of such.. As I said somewhere else on here, I sleep in the roof as we have too many bodies & only 5 rooms (1 being the bathroom)... his greenhouse is kept warmer than the loft, it's about 2 degrees above extenal temp.
I'm considering having a snorkle fitted, so I can stop my nose from getting frost bite.. it'ud stop all that condensation that has a tendancy to bring on 6wks worth of bronchitis.
Have to put 3 extra layers of clothing on to go to bed & the skin doesn't get another viewing until about March! :( :)
If last winter (or was it the yr. before!) is anything to go by & we only had a tad of snow, the house filled with all those let off school & I was the runner to get them home if they lived any distance & he fed them all & dried the clothes in between snowball fights... oh deep joy!
Next year they'll be breeding like rabbits from all the close contact & we get to see the circle complete another revolution.
Apart from the boring practical stuff... snow's great, nature survives & civalisation as we have come to know it collapses in a heap.. which is funny in it's own right.:D

You're right about the effect on sound Mike. I used to live on a busy road at the top of a hill. If I woke up to silence I knew it was snowing; often there was a bus stuck at the bottom of each side of the hill stopping all the traffic.

Down south 1" of snow means 2 - 6 hours in a *&*&* traffic jam.

Good thing about the 110 is not the 4WD and chunky tyres which don't help on the M25 but I can sleep in it so don't have to even try to get home.

often there was a bus stuck at the bottom of each side of the hill stopping all the traffic..

I remember Kent in 1963, had my first landy, Series I with a soft top (nearly froze with that 'heater', it wouldn't even keep the windscreen free from ice, it was so cold. I put a hardboard ceiling over the front seats, with a curtain along the back of it to try to keep the warmth in the front). Had a set of chains but no point in putting them on, as every hill was solid with cars that had got stuck, on the road, the verges, everywhere! Suppose I could have made a fortune towing them up the hill, but stayed at home and enjoyed the quiet, went skating as the river was frozen, I think my bum is still bruised from falling down! The water pipe to the house froze, had a coal boiler so kept the house warm, but couldn't use any water, brought in buckets of snow to thaw to flush the loo ('if it's brown, flush it down, if its yellow let it mellow' was the order for loo flushing), and jerry cans of water for drinking, cooking, washing.

Don't want it that bad again, and if the snow brings the power lines down how many people will be without heat or cooking?

I'm still hoping for a cold crisp winter with snow though!:)

Can you write an idiot proof step by step... maybe with added picture guide so I can learn how to post ones from my pc onto here. Maybe stick it in the camara section for us. Pretty pretty please.:)
Easy peasy :)
1. Save the pic on your pc, as a jpeg, and resize it to 800x600 pixels or smaller (you can use Paint or MS Photo Editor for resizing, or there are lots of free downloads available)

2. When you are replying to a post (or posting a new thread) scroll down the page and click on 'manage attachments'.

3. In the pop-up window that appears, click on the first 'browse'. ANother window will open allowing you to locate the pic on your pc.

4. Double click on the picture file you want to post.

(repeat 1-4 for up to five pics)

5. Click on 'upload' in the pop-up window, and wait till the pop-up window says it's done.

6. Click on 'submit reply' as normal, and Bob should be your uncle :)

then you will see blank boxes with browse next to them:

click on browse and it will take you to your documents or pictures deending on which windows set up you have.

when you find the picture you want click on it and it will show up automatically in those blank boxes

last of all you must rtemember to press the upload button

step 1 then... I found a pic, don't know how to save as j peg.
This is all going to sund like such a winge..
I messed around for ages trying to resize one the other night & the view just kept honing in on the rust or some bricks on a wall the other side of the road until finally I crashed the pc by opening & clicking on anything so finally I gave up. My eldest said next day.. it's easy, don't use paint u can't do it with that & I'll put something on pc.. which of course he hasn't.

Newsreader
12th Oct 2005, 10:17
Alice there is a way of doing it with Paint but I have never sussed it out either.

Do you have Microsoft Office on your machine? if so, go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Photo Editor. Open your image in there, click on image > resize. In the window that comes up, choose 'pixels' in the drop down menu and change the larger number to 800. The smaller number will change itself in the same proportion, and hey presto pic resized :)

If you don't have MS Office, oh bum ... :D I'll go look for these downloads.

Alternatively, what imaging software do you have on your machine for handling your photos? It may have a resizer, but then again it may not :D

I might have windows office.. there again I might not. It says windows xp on the sticker.. but you have to bear in mind I've not yet managed to type & print anything from this thing.
I worked out how to use the e-mail & keep anything I've done on there, floating round in space somewhere waiting to be hit by an asteroid.
If I put stuff on pc, if it doesn't crash losing it's data then the kids would hack or play with it, spread what they thought was funny via msn friends. Oh the joys of modern technology..
You could always just post a piccie of a green 110 & say it was mine, be a lot easier.. & I could remain the comfortable cabbage.

Jim it's an hour at present ... if you make it too short, can be frustrating for peeps who haven't checked 'remember me' go off to make a cup of tea, get distracted, come back and find you've been logged out ...

Fair enough, suits me, I'll just have to log on less frequently! It's just so wet at the moment I am working indoors and checking regularly with so much going on.

Uhmm.. just to be different as ever.. I log off & sometimes take another look before bed & I'm already 'not on line' anymore. I've also had no problems with coming back after the changes.. is it 'cos I set a remember me thingie or just that we've broadband or lordy only knows what..
It works fine so far for me... :)
Oh.. except the greenfaced smilie is orange:p
I'll take that last statement back.. he's green now!
NO... I'll take that actual last statement back.. when writing he's green but when previewing he changes.

Hey alice has changed her aviator, did you read and follow the instruction afterall...

Hope the winter is cold and snowy, me likes them. Going to czech again after xmas, last year i was there, it was -18c and 3m of snow, and thats in the low areas. Thinking about driving landy this time and maybe sneaking in some off roading in the snow, when i got the landy it came with snow chains that im yet to use....

Cheers toppa.Did I hell.. had 7 sprogs for lunch & so one jumped in to help.. made me join a photobucket.com (but I got my e-mail addie wrong) so she did it via hers. They tell me that the new camara (or the pc) saves them as jpegs anyway..
Erm.. note to Bernie.. the son has windows office on his laptop.

& although the afternoon was spent going through the albums choosing suitable pics. with snow in them..
& when I returned from the college pickup (via the landy breaking down & having to call the RAC out) she a whoosse.. doesn't like the cold wet weather!
& the eldest reloading the scanner stuff he'd saved elsewhere..
All the kids scanned & saved pics whilst I cooked something that wasn't very edible..
The short answer to your question would be NO..
Now pics are stored on the sons area of pc which I'm locked out of & he will let me have them 'maniana'

Bernie has educated me about this in a few previous posts on this thread or on 'trying to log on all day'.
If you log off you won't be on line.
I don't log off, I just go to another site or disconnect, as next time I visit the forum I don't have to type my username and password.
Not logging off means you are shown as on line for an hour, which could be a problem if someone PMs you and expects a quick reply.

OK.. first attempt at following instructions:rolleyes: (I'll have you know I was stumped for a while as I couldn't find the manage attachments thing to tick as I'd clicked the quick reply button instead) ... so that'll be step 1a on Bernie's idiot proof instructions

Why thank-you kind Sir.. I couldn't have done it without all of your help.. & no you didn't get it wrong.. it's just that I really am an idiot when it comes to following instructions! Some say I do it deliberately as I'm lazy.. but for me it comes naturally.
I shall have another go before I close all windows & forget what on earth it was I just did.

Did you like the special effects then (not so natural... things are not always how they appear on film) the gnat of the then brother in law yanking on the tree.

Well, looks like I'm the only one hoping for another mild winter. Snow certainly is pretty, and I enjoy playing with the kids in it, but trying to land a 65t aeroplane at 160kt (195mph) on an ice covered runway in a heavy snow shower is not so funny - we get enough of that landing in Scandinavia without doing it at base too.

Well the way 'certain' airlines keep turfing people off, there won't be any passengers left to fly anyway :D ;)

Anyway, up here, after three days and nights of biblical non-stop rain earlier this week, we now have cold, crisp, and glorious sunshine :) Lovely.

It's a shocking story, isn't it? I happened to hear the story directly from the capatin involved the day before it hit the papers.

The reason they were removed is that we, like other airlines, can only carry a restricted number of disabled pax. This a legal restriction placed by the authorities in order to avoid complete disaster if the aircraft had to be evacuated. The number permitted corresponds to the number of cabin crew, in this case 4. easyJet can only carry 3 disabled on their 737s as they have fewer crew than us. The difference is that they have good PR, whist the press love to hate RYR.

The restrictions were displayed on the bookings website - the trip organisers hadn't bothered to read the conditions of travel. The part of the cock-up that RYR are responsible for is that they were all able to board the aircraft at all - they should have been stopped by the gate staff after the 4th diable pax was loaded, but sometimes the blind or partially sighted look like anyone else; they don't all appear as obvious as Blunkett, for example.

He he Snagger, thought you might respond to that. I agree that the crew did exactly the right thing, they had no alternative, whatever the consequences for the party. But, if what the lady says is true ...

Katherine Hurst, from Norwich, said she had called Ryanair on 20 January to check that there were no travel restrictions placed on the group ... Mrs Hurst said when she was asked if the group needed assistance she said they did not, and was told to go ahead and book.
... then Ryanair should be apologising profusely, offering full refunds and sending the call centre agent off for retraining, IMO.

Hmm ... might have something to do with Ryanair's own attitude to the wider world, as displayed by its boss - isn't he the one who registered his car as a taxi in Dublin, so that he could use bus lanes and avoid traffic jams?

Can't argue with that. I'm not exactly proud of the company's attitude towards pax. Even the cabin crew are sometimes brusque, especially at Stansted (luton lot are mostly very good, but there is a lot of variation between bases).

As for MoL, if there was a queue for giving him a good kicking, the pax would have a long, long wait before the staff were finished with him.:banging::clown2::Bloodymad

Absolutely ROTFPMSL, thanks for that :rotfl:

I've only had one experience with Ryanair, years ago from LGW, and I have to say I found every staff member very brusque, in fact downright rude, from check-in right through to cabin crew. But in fairness that was only one experience. Have flown countless times with Easyjet and am amazed at their politeness, patience and good humour, especially considering some of the folk they have to deal with.

It's a sad truth that EZYs customer care is lightyears ahead of ours, and it shouldn't be. I occasionally get cabin crew complaining to me about disruptive pax, and when I speak to the pax, I sometimes find that it is the crew that sparked the problem. It's not deliberate; it's acombination of them being stressed and tired from vindictive and abusive managers and terrible pay (£900pcm), and largely from dealing in a second language and foreign culture leading to misinterpretations (many of our cabin crew are eastern European/Spanish/Italian). Most of the crew at LTN are very good, but the average needs to be raised.

Shops getting low on milk, the door always open blowing a gale, the floor wet from outdoors coming in, damp clothes, not enough hotwater bottles, freezing my butt off in the roof.

Doesn't hold a comparable image to being responsible for a ruddy great aircraft tho'

...just a set of complaints when really there are many lovely things about snow too, as many here have already expressed.
