I am interested in taking a trip from Morocco to Kenya. I am new to this sort of thing, so I need some advice on how to budget for such an endevor and what kind of trip I may be up against. I am currently in Morocco.
Also, I do not have a vehicle. So if you have any ideas on where to look for one capable of such a journey, I would appriciate it.

Hi Brent,

Although I've been to Morocco from UK 4 times, I've never undertaken such a long trip as you intend to do so can't comment on budget experiences etc. What I can suggest about obtaining a vehicle is approach the Government and private tourist depts who operate the Land Rover fleets for the tourists. They must have some sort of disposal programme. The current ones in use are in very good condition so I don't imagine they keep them too long. My choice would be a Hard Top Defender Station 110 Wagon. Less windows and only 3 doors for security purposes. Add on bits and parts to your hearts content.

Another consideration is will you be returning to Morocco? Leaving or importing your vehicle into some African countries can be really expensive: Sometimes up to 400% the value of the vehicle!

There are a few African members or members living in Africa on the forum who I'm sure will be along with more information for you.

Mate you need to check the logistics of your route. Main probs will be Drc and Sudan.
Are prepared to take the risk of driving thru the Drc ?? Alternatively going around the top and through Sudan. Look at the map first and decide your options. Then think of the vehicle. Apart from Drc (bad roads and potholes as per my avatar) I would be happy with a Peugeot 405 sw or similar - more than adequate and loads of parts. Only sticky bits may be Maroc border/ Mauritanie sand until you hit the tracks and excessively corrugated roads in northern Mali.

Thanks for the replys. I will not be going through Drc. Alternativly as you said, either around to the north or by a southern route. I have taken these into consideration. 90mile have you travelled this before.
I am tight on expensenses. This is really my largest concern. Any ideas on the cost of a trip like this. Minus the perchase of a vehicle.

Morning Brent
I went through the Drc before it brewed up so a while ago. Personally I cant imagine the roads themselves will have improved. Expenses.... well thats difficult - you can work out visas etc and get as many as possible before
dept Maroc - but these are determined by your route.
If north of Drc - which borders are open - I wouldnt fancy Sudan, northern Kenya - well Somali bandits, northern Uganda Lords army and all that crap.. South - you need to get around drc and the lake.. I was on the road for best part of a year... how long are you intending to be travelling for???

cheers
