On my 1983 SWB the gear selection after using reverse is often difficult and finding 1st takes patience and some nice words especially when in the petrol station and the queue behind is getting anxious!

I find that if I push the stick over to the left and flip it, it will then spring back to the right and after a couple of goes I can find a forward gear. I assume that there is obviously some wear on the return spring/selector. Any one know of any easy fix?
Cheers,

I had this problem too...i fiound it easier to put it into second then first...

mine was with the reverse resistance plate, it will be slightly incorrectly adjusted, once you put it in reverse if the plate is too far to the left it makes the gear stick misaligned against 1st/2nd gear selector so you tend to be pushing it in the middle of two selectors

Remove the floors, then remove the tunnel cover and you will then see the resistance plate and springs just underneath the gear stick...it has a bolt on it...either screw the bolt in or out too adjust so that the resistance starts when the ball on the end of the gear stick is in the middle of 1st/2nd gear selector...

I had the same issue on my '83 SWB. I removed the propshaft cover and examined the gear selectors with the gearstick still in place. The end of my gearstick is worn enough that after reversing, it's possible to find apparent neutral without fully retracting the reverse selector. This prevents 1st gear being selected as reverse is still engaged. I found the interim solution was to ensure that I fully disengage reverse, before sliding the gear lever across for 1st. Hope this helps.
