Sun Roof Leakage

I have discovered a design fault in this vehicle’s sun roof, and am reliably informed that it is such a common fault that specialist repairers will not even consider putting their reputation on the line in an effort to resolve the problem. One sun roof specialist has tried to repair ten different Discoveries, and will not even attempt to repair another!


The difficulty is that the sunroof is not watertight to the unique roof manufacture on this age of Discovery

Although I have taken out extended warranty on this vehicle through the Land Rover Dealership, I am informed that the sun roof (s) are not covered!!!

Can you, please, advise me of how this can be repaired easily and effectively? The suggestion that I have a complete refit would be both costly and ineffective if the original design fault is not rectified.

I have a feeling that there is a kit of parts to fit new sliders and seals which might help. I don't know where I heard it or even if it is for the newer model Discovery. A search of some of the other forums might bring something to light, as might a check back with other dealers.
As a last resort I would get out with the silicone, or better still some of the sealer they use for building caravans.

Hi!! Before you do anything else, see my problem which I have just posted under the "leaky discovery" discussion thread. I thought that I had a leaky rear sunroof, only to discover that the water is coming in from the gutter area, going between the roof and bodyside panels and entering the body in that way.

This may not be the cause of your own problem. Check if the trim around the sun-roof is wet. If not, look where the water comes from - mine was seen to be dripping at both sides from the speakers at the rear and from the side panel just close to the back seats.

May I recommend that you strip out the trim panels carrying the rear speakers and the ones around the curved roof windows. This exposes the box section where the water comes in, mine was obviously rusty and water has probably been coming in this way from new. Pouring water into the gutters produced a good stream of water out of these box sections!!!

I can't blame the windscreen repair men not wanting to touch a disco for a leaky sun-roof, because I am sure that it's not the sun roof that's leaking in 90% of these cases!!

The day I brought my secondhand Landrover home after buying it from a “respectable" Landrover dealer I found that not only the sunroof leaked, but water came in through a seal in the passenger door, the window’s didn’t close properly, the window-wipers don’t go back into position when you turn them off, it had a slow puncture, welding under the passenger seat had come adrift, the casing inside the passenger would fall off when you opened it etc. etc. etc:mad:

Anyway my reply when complaining about this was “that’s landrovers for you”:( ...After many phonecalls I thought the best thing would be to write to the area manager, the outcome being we made some compromises and they fixed a few things...not the sunroof though! I have been told that if you lob some vaseline on the seal every now and again it should help. Personally I can’t really be bothered, I have gotten quite used to being freezing cold (cos of the faulty windows), and sitting on a soggy driver’s seat every morning.

Aye you cant beat that wet bum feeling in the morning!

Thats why mine has a black bin bag in the cab that I place on the seat before I set off for work!
