Hello everyone,me and hubby are quite new to Landies.Discovery 1995 plus a lovely 1985 90.The problem is with the Disco. When accelerating there is a ticking sound. It's been going on about three weeks and doesn't seem to be getting any worse. The engine in the Disco is a 300TDi.We've tried lots of different ways to find out what it could be.I'm sure I read an article somewhere about this problem. Please help,it's driving me nuts!:banghead:

Is it a load clunky noise more than a tick? Does it only happen on accelaration, and not when cruising? Does it happen when you turn the steering? A front inner CV joint will click on accelaration, but do Disco's have these? Can anyone confirm this?

Hi Stephen,no it's not a clunky sound. It kind of sounds like some kind of tappit rattle. As the disco gets heated,it really gets going. It's more noticable at higher revs.A non-land rover owner suggested that the cylinder head gasket is away, there are no symptoms of this.

Hmmm........
Does it have hi-milage?
You could get your local garage to do a compression check. That way if there is a gasket failure, it would show up without the engine being taken to bits.
Have you checked the tappets? My V8 rattles a little when under load and cold. I have put this down the a worn hydraulic cam tappets. It is much better now I have changed the oil, and goes away when it warms up.

Yes,she's high miles(119,000)but aren't all Landies? She had an engine rebuild in March 2002,The previous owner tried to run the engine without water?!The last oil change was 6,000 miles ago.I'll take her down to the local garage for a compression check, just to be on the safe side.I can't find anything in the Haynes about tappets on a 300TDi.The tip about your V8 oil change could prove useful, mate,so thanks.

Next time you hear that ticking, try putting slight pressure on low/high gear transfer gearlever with your hand, pull it fully to your right towards steering wheel, then see if ticking continues.....
Let me know what happens ;)

Dear Old Fart, tried what you suggested, grating noise! No change in ticking noise. I was reading some of the other threads last night. The New Year Bunk house sounds like a lot of fun. We're off to Berwick upon Tweed in our caravan for the Hogmany holiday with the ticking Disco.Good to hear you're a caravan fan too.:beers:

Lol....sorry to hear yer still ticking, i havent a clue what it might be since my idea didnt work
Just got back from a few days up north....not far from Berwick on Tweed.....jeeze it was freezing and foggy up there.
Twas so cold my blue gaz froze.....luckily i'd taken a propane bottle as well :D
So if yer can tick yer way to B.O.T Why not Durness ?
We've got a whole field to ourselves....i'm sure we could find you some space ;)
Janine

:) Thanks for the offer of space in your field, mate. Can't come out to play up there this time, but could well be up for it any other time. :) Sorry to hear your butane froze,we'll be taking the propane with us now for sure!!!!!HO,hum, back to the Disco, she's been looked at and prodded and she's still hanging on to her secret.Oil is getting changed on Friday,so I'll see what happens then.Afriend locally, suggested that it could be that I've put crappy diesel in her.I would not do this intentionally, got any more ideas anyone? We suspect this friend only runs petrol engines by the way, that would account for his sort of "pinking" theory!!!
i am sure you would have checked this one,but i had a similiar problem on a 98 300tdi,and found that the fan cowling was'nt latched properly, and was catching on the fan.
not all who wander are lost.....

Are you hearing the ticking when the vehicle is stationary or only on the move?
If your only hearing it while on the move then you may want to check the front prop shaft U/J's. This will create a ticking noise if one of them is warn and requires replacing.

HI,Yug & Budgie,sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.Been a bit busy,feeble excuse,I know.

I don't know what happened there maybe a PC gremlin. Thanks for your ideas I'm going to check out the fan theory tomorrow as soon as it's light.No-one thought of that thanks Yug:dog: I' get the mechanic to check the u/j on the prop shaft for wear when she's away to the garage on Friday.I don't think it@s a prop shaft problem becuase it only ticks when under load or acceleration.Still, who can say :band: I really like the new selection of smileys,by the way they add something to the writing.I've got a BIG problem with the rear sun-roof------------you know what I'm going to say don't you all?_______________ yep, it's leaking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!hubby is getting me and the dog a shower cap each for Christmas................:Cross: The weather has been a wee bit wet,and now the dog is having a shower each time she's in the Disco............she[the dog]then shakes herself and I get wet too.Iwouldn't mind that much if it was only the pooch getting wet she loves water the colder the better. :dog: I'll sign off for the moment.Regards from the lucky owner of the peeling, leaking, ticking Disco......................... :banghead2

I don' know what happened to my reply. It seems to have vanished: :dunno1: The disco is away to the mechanic this morning.I checked the fan cowling and needless to say it wasn't that, but thanks for the suggestion,Yug.I'm not sure about the u/js on the prop shaft, Budgie, but hopefully the boys at the oil-slick place will check that out.Just a matter of waiting now.The ticking and dash-peeling have been over-shadowed this past few days by the leaking rear sun-roof. I seem to have stemmed the flow, though [or it isn't raining as hard here].Well that's all for now, from the lucky owner of the peeling, leaking, ticking Disco :Cross:

Janine....to my knowledge its only the 300 Tdi that sometimes has the peeling dash. I had the chance of a decent 300 but the dash was ....yuk :snarl: its something that would really iritate me, much the same as a squint painting does to some people.
Yup we've been in the Museum of flights coffee bar a few times, and i often fancied the microlight flights on other side of the road.
Like i said in my email, we arrive in East Linton at friends on the night of Friday 20th Dec.....we'll be knacked after driving straight up from here in Somerset .
Saturday is our only day for shopping in Edinburgh, and Saturday evening we'll bev dining out with our friends......but i'll sure try and fit a quick "hello" visit in.
Sunday we leave early for Dingwall where we're staying on Sunday night, and then Monday its off on the last leg to Durness :yay: :yay: :yay:
How come your injectors are loose, its very easy to tighten em.
Are they done now.....or still loose ?
I change my oil every 3,000 miles, if yer gotta a good engine its worth looking after i reckon.
Any white stuff up there yet :buck:

I remember seeing a squadron of Vulcans sitting the tarmac at an RAF base in Linconshire back in the 70's :yay: (think it may have been Waddington)
There's nothing like the old 'V' bombers!

My dad was in the RAF Regement and was out at Tengi in Singapour during the troubles. There was a squadron of Vulcans based there, along with Lightnings. Most of the time he was on the anti-aircraft guns, but was often out on patrol. He says the Vulcans were amazing things. They once scrambled at full alert. They did a quick start, straight onto afterburner, and withing about 5 seconds they were quite litteraly going verticle! This was a fully loaded nuclear bomber! The Lightnings were even better, they would start, go to afterburner, almost imediatly pull the undercariage up, go nose up and just disapear. He had to remove the bomb bay door of one that had been shot to bits. It was apparently huge!
He says the Lightning pilots were all evil. When they were on the gun on the end of the runway, the Lightnings would use them for target practice! They would take off, but stay low, and wait till they were over the gun possition before pulling up and give them a good blast of exhaust!
There was once an incedent where once squadie got drunk, and decided he wanted to fly home (to Glasgow!). He staggered uppon a fully armed Canberra. So he thought he try to figure it out! He managed to get in, and started punching buttons trying to get the thing to start! The Firestreak's were pointing right at the ammo. dump! The Military Police 'had a word' with him.
MY DAD NEARLY KILLED SANTA CLAUS!!! The base was on full alert. This time as far as the knew it was for real, they were expecting the enemy Migs any second. The Bofour's were armed and they were standing by. A target was spotted, a small, slow aircraft was heading thier way. They aimed and had orders to destroy anything that got near. Finger on the trigger, about to fire, when a Land Rover came screaming up and a offiver jumped out shouting 'stop, stop!' It turns out that it was Santa Claus, and he was going to parachute down to a field full of local kids behind the trees! That would have warped a few minds......Father Christmas being vapourised at 500 feet by anti-aircraft fire! Needless to say, he made his drop.

I got cut off in my prime again there.I think i've got a pc gremlin............The ex-sevicemen who came into the Museum when I was a guide there told stories of the fuel pouring out of the Lightning, when the afterburner was lit the runway was set on fire.........Scary eh?Your Dad must have more great stories, too. It would be nice to hear them sometime.......................................... .................................................. .................................................. .........................Now what about this off-roading??????PS I just love areoplanes and cars.............................................. ................................................

They held the All Rover Rally at the museum a few times. I only went once, and it was during the hoof and tooth crisis, so there was no off-roading, but there was a site somewhere near-by that they used previous years. I camped in the museum grounds, and there was a good gathering of Land Rovers, and other Rover cars. This year it will be a Kelburn Castle, Largs, over the last weekend of May. Not sure if it's going back to the Museum of Flight. I hope so, it was a good site, even though it is further than Largs for me. It is a more interesting site, as you can go and look at the museum with all the big toys, where as in Kelburn.....you can go look at the castle gardens.....:goofylook
