View Full Version : Love hate love again.
Love:- Started a bit more work on Saturday on DL3 only to go backwards,. first came a new bulb for the headlight, only to discover it wasn't the bulb so checked the fuse (visually) looked fine so dug out the tester and started hunting. Then hunted a little more then had lunch.Hate:- Then went back to the fuse box fuse fine so was the headlight, put everything back no headlight. More rummaging and frustration turned out to be the fuse. Now she won't run on gas on tickover, checked everything I could think of admitted defeat decided to fit the rock sliders, didn't go well at all one side wouldn't match up with the bulkhead bolt the other would but the tube wouldn,t slide down the out rigger. That took care of Sat and Sun, Monday went to the garage with the gas problem well rich mixture!!!! Much head scratching 2 hours later I'd dislodged a vacuum pipe that opens the air meter when running on gas came home and fiitted both r/sliders she lookes better and goes a dream in, love again,:luvver: Conclusion the weekend is for driving and beer and rugby.:D Nortrak is only 5 days away, (make sure there's plenty of coffee).
Who's going?

Boogers is in Winter mode just now....towropes attached, winter tyres on, and a freezing cold driver!..LOL
I have the wee ones at the weekend so wont be there :(
Also, I have been waiting 3 weeks now for an order from Paddocks...they now say there is no record of it, having debited my account for £150...so am not impressed. They are not returning calls or replying to e-mails....getting ****ed off now.!!! :( :bigun2:
What I hate about mail order is that you can't supply a delivery address other than the card address and they don't want to come up with a system to anable that. They don't seem to think we work!!!!!!! Ordered some stuff from devon 4x4 and they were very helpfull good phone manner etc. Had the sorry sir but it will have to come to the card address, so asked if I could be notified of a delivery day, no problem someone will phone when we know, well what do you know, the arrival af my stuff announced the delivery day thank god for next door. Maybe there is an opening for a business ordering and collecting deliveries for later collection by the customer at their leisure.
Arhhh!!!!!!!:Bloodymad

Backs4more,
Sorry to hear you've had problems with Paddock. I've had some stuff from them in the past with out problems. Their communication on when orders shipped could have been better (too used to Amazon telling you at every stage of the order!) and once a part wasn't in stock, so didn't arrive with the rest of the stuff, but other than that service has been good. They do sometimes take a day or two to reply to e-mails.
Just about to order some more stuff, so let us know how you get on.
Cheers,
Ross.
ps do you know the guy at the walled garden coffee shop in Monymusk?

Latest with Paddocks is that although last time I managed to speak to someone half the bits were in stock, whilst they have been waiting for the other item, they have sold the stuff that I have effectivly paid for and been waiting on...so I now have to wait until that stuff becomes available again.
What really gets me is that I phonned to confirm the items were in stock, I cancelled the item out of stock and replaced it with a much more expensive item that was confirmed as being available. I was told all would be despatched and i would receive it in 2-3 days. That was 8 days ago. I called yesterday and lo and behold, they are waiting on stock comming in.
My last order with them back in July also took longer than expected. I called, confirmed they held a full exhaust for a V*, paid by card, then waited 3 weeks!
You would think I would learn!
So, in conclusion...I doubt I will be using them again!

Wouldnt you think it was about time we had a decent mail order parts supplier North of the Border?
I have had trouble with paddocks, craddocks, BLRS, the lot. Mostly delivery times being unnacceptable, major problems with surcharges...usual crud. I had one part costing less than £15 which was going to cost £18 to post because of surcharges.
I have been using Exeter 4x4 for a lot of parts lately...and Dunsfold. Problem with Exeter 4x4, even though they are exceptionally helpful, and very understanding, polite and communicative (in fact everything you want) the last time I wanted stuff, I had to ring for a price, rather than get a full price online. That is the only drawback, otherwise they are excellent. They even changed couriers so that the surcharges were less on the parts I ordered. Worth using them, even if you do have to contact them for a price. Which to be honest, given the propensity of Paddocks pricing system re: carriage (like, you dont know what it will cost 'til you get the bill) I think I woud rather do. Speak to a human, who actually understands what you are asking for!
But, as I say... it would be nice to have a Mail order supplier nearer home. A Really big one, that would be super competitive on prices....I use Davidson and Macmillan in Inverness for parts too (Chris is very helpful) but tend to drive the 120 miles there and back...LOL, 'cos I like a wee blether with him!
Tell you what really gets my goat though.... A while ago I ordered some parts from paddocks, and even though their carriage charges were less than BLRS (£9 cheaper, on the same parts) I still had to pay a surcharge. Now...they were the wrong bits they sent out... I had to send them back (must admit, helpful assistant...got sorted out fine) but I DIDN'T have to pay the surcharge. Why should it cost less? It's the same flaming distance innit? Rant rant...
Surcharges...Ptooey. Apparently, I live on an island, according to one company. Another company, "Oh, we only deliver to the end of the Caledonian canal..." (my answer was a bit ripe I fear...."What, are you delivering by BARGE??") I have even told suppliers to look at the map if they dont believe I live on the mainland.
Sorry for the tirade! Got it off my chest I guess... Thats my landy Love Hate relationship.... A Parts relationship at least!

Big Sandy,
I fully agree with you mate!!!
I have a couple of hobbies that involve me ordering bits from Englandshire and it amazes me the difference in service.
For example, a place I use in Norfolk for fishing gear has never ever ler me down. As long as my order was before 2pm, they had the package at my house, using Royal Mail, the next day, FREE OF CHARGE!
Another place, this time, in Birmingham, charged me £9 for next day delivery, but took 4 days. When I called to ask why I had to have next day, they said it was the only way the courier would deliver to such an out of the way place.....Aberdeen!
Infact, come to think of it, I had to order a replacement medal for Rememberence Sunday. I called the place in Brighton on the Wednesday before Rememberence at 4:30. They confirmed they had one in stock so I went online to order it at about 4:35. At about 4:45 I got a call confirming that the card payment had been accepted and all was well. I got an e-mail 5 minutes later saying the same. On Friday morning it dropped through the letter box. :D I called to thank them and they were most upset it had taken 2 days to reach me, so they refunded the postage. Now thats service!!
I now live in a "highlands" postcode, meaning I have to have "surcharges" applied. So, living 17 miles from scotlands third largest city and Europes oil and gas capital, 10 miles from scotlands second busiest airport and work in scotlands biggest college, I do wonder what it is like for folk North of Aviemore.

Have to agree about Dunsfold. Look up the parts in their list, email for a quote, then phone to order. Very good service, and a massive range of often hard-to-get parts.

There is .... www.landroverheaven.com (http://www.landroverheaven.com) ... owned and operated right here in Scotland. Whats more, owned and operated by a member of this forum.
Might be worth speaking to Andy before you head South!!

But of course! Andy is very helpful, as we all know. He will be getting my next request for a quote for SIII bits.
Perhaps it's time we pushed his fame further afield? I have to admit, if I lived nearer to him, I would be on his doorstep most weeks....
I think though, that Cradds and Padds get the usage they do because they are an online shoppe, like LR Supermarket etc... Its a sign of the 'convenience' world we live in. (I have actually visited Paddocks and Craddocks, but still preferred the smaller (though they are getting bigger) services of land ranger services in Middlewich, Cheshire (lived down there for a whiley...)) Convenient because you can come in from work, and order the bits you want there and then, online, at two in the morning if you wanted to. Not so convenient when they don't deliver though.....
I think we all know we will get a good standard of service from Andy. But it is interesting to see the difference between some companies, as Backs4more says. I have similar experiences myself. Right enough though, once bitten, twice shy! A company only has to muck me about once, and I won't use them again...and I am happy to tell anybody off the experience! I will always give my custom to a supplier that I know will deliver the goods, even if I have to perhaps pay a bit more. I just get so flaming wound up about SURCHARGES!!! :D (just frightened myself by thinking that I have been ordering land rover parts for 30 years!!!! Hey, Mean Green...does the name Turner Kirkpatrick ring any bells with you?? Or Alan and Ross Veitch? )

LOL!!!
Turner Tirkpatrick used to own the garage on the southern outskirts of Girvan, we bought an ex military SII from him in the early 70's.... The garage used to have an ex-mil snow-plough parked on the forecourt. I am not sure, but I think he was involved in the 'Bridge Mill Smithy' at one point, you'll know that place for sure, on the northeren side of Girvan, lots of ex nato stuff in there nowadays, (at least, last time I was there...couple years now) need very big cheque book. It used to be owned by Ross Veitch...his son Alan owned/managed Navrig Metals I think. (last time I saw him was several years ago, heading south on the M6 round the M62 junction...'twas one of them 'I know him...WAhay, hello...wave..never saw again moments....')
LOL! Had parts for landies off em all!
Bet if I said, Harry Fairbairn........ :D ...
Huey....sorry mate...sidelined your thread a bit! Still, it's a lifelong love-hate relationship here....
