When driving in a straight line, steering is ok, when turning, the steering wheel feels like is has a restriction which makes the steering feel tight, a few degrees of turn and it goes away and comes back after a few more degrees. It does it in both left and right hand turns. Oil levels OK. A ny ideas?

Sounds like it may be stuck in difflock, check lever position. Have you used it recently?

Is the power steering belt slipping slightly under load?
Has it always done it?.......don't know about landies but some boxes can be adjusted to get rid of straight ahead slack in the steering....with the consequence that it can be excessively stiff on turning

Disco 2 dont have difflock, although mine does as I have fitted one myself. Just checked to be sure and it is off.

The power steering belt is part of the main belt and that was replaced by me a few months ago without and problems, I doubt it is slipping, no squeals etc, how would you check it?
The problem started a couple of weeks ago, I have had it from new and it has never done this before, the box was replaced 2 years ago due to a leak (which turned out to be a diesel lek that travelled over the box and made it look like it was leaking).

I believe it can be adjusted but why would it suddenly need to be adjusted?

Alas I am a muppet! Just going on general description of your problem and not thinking. Better follow up the thread where I said it is fine to bleed the brakes while travelling at speed......lol

Don't know the Disco 2, but check the UJ's in the steering column (a common fault on early TVRs like the Tasmin!) they may be binding as your turn the steering wheel...

Sounds like the same symptoms as my 110, which forumeers have told me could well be due to the belt getting wet and slipping. Have you been driving it in wet conditions?

Sounds like this to me! I had the same on my Disco 1...

So I soaked the knuckle joints in WD40 then coated them with spray grease. No problems since.

Certainly sounds like a UJ cup seizing.

Question - Do you have the "5 Star" "low profile" road wheels?

Hi there,

Have you checked your steering damper for damage?. If it has any flat spots or dents on it, this could cause the steering to be tight when turning!!

If you have fitted difflock yourself then I assume you do a bit of off roading where damage could occurr.

Like the previous poster, I had a similar problem which turned out to be a knackered steering damper. Replaced with a Bilstein unit, and hey presto! all sorted. If it does end up being the damper, I can certainly recommend spending an extra £10-20 on something like the Bilstein: it makes a huge difference to the way the car feels.
