View Full Version : Chatter when cold

Any experiences of a chatter from under the bulkhead/ transmission tunnel area when cold? Starts when the engine is reving high shortly before gearchange. It's definately a metallic rattle. Thought at first it may be a heatshield, but reckon it would do it when warm as well. Or possibly cat?? Gearchange mechanism? Worried in case it's the autobox. It's been getting worse over the past few weeks.

Are you sure it isn't your teeth or bones in your toes chattering in the cold? :p

Seriously, however, I would first suspect something to be loose in the exhaust system, because as you know, metals and chemicals change slightly when they heat up.

EDIT: I've just remembered, my 2A's exhaust makes a bit of a rattling/chattery noise at one of the joints until it has warmed up. I think it could be down to a loose connection somewhere?

Sounds like it might be your cat. Easier to pinpoint if you had your truck sitting over a pit where you can listen for the rattle while someone revs the engine. Mine does that right now, need to replace driverside cat. But

Sounds like your cat but it won't just happen when you're cold. It won't also be consistent either but it does sound like a couple of pebbles in a tin can. Would be easier if you could have your truck sitting over a pit while someone revs the engine. Very easy to hear where the sound is coming from then. Mine is doing that right now on the driver side so need to replace soon.

Oops sorry for the double post.

DOnt know much about disco's, but had a similar thing on my defender, it was the handbrake cable, when cold and parked, cable taught touching under tunnel, when moving in gear, cable slack, not touching tunnel,
As said dont know much about discos, but the defender has a thick cable...

Cheers

Cheers. Can I eliminate the cat then if temp isn't a factor?
The sound could be described as pebbles rattling in a can. It increases uniformally with the rpm at the top of the rev range before the gearchange. It only occurs during acceleration between each gearchange. There is no sound on overrun or cruising. It only happens till about 10 mins from cold in a morning then goes and doesn't come back for the rest of the day.

Thanks, interesting thought. After I had the 24k service the handbrake now has 3 clicks, instead of the previous 2. I wonder if the extra slack is allowing some movement somewhere. Not sure why temp would make a difference though.
Booked it in for some brake pads on Monday so will ask them to take a look over the pit.

our 110 chatters at idle but i think it might be the clutch bearings or something like that....

3 clicks is what it should be on most cars :)

Shrek,

Have you had a chance to take a look-see underneath to see if there's anything loose?

My cat doesn't rattle all the time. Sometimes upon startup if but sometimes not. I hear it more often at lower speeds like when I'm off-road but sometimes I hear it when I'm sitting at a set of lights. However as soon as I start moving and the revs come up, the sound gets drowned out as well as the vibration frequency changes and it settles down.

It'll be hard to tell until you have it over a pit so you can listen for the location of the noise. When I first heard my cat rattling, it sounded like it was coming from further up when sitting inside the vehicle but after listening to it from underneath, you can tell it's the cat.

Hope you figure it out.

Had a listen today and I reckon it might be the cat. It's booked in on Monday for a full set of brake pads so will ask them to check it out then book it in at the dealer under warranty.
Cheers Shrek

Sorry to resurrect an old topic, but my Disco makes exactly (I think) the same noise, at first I thought it was something loose just "this" side of the bulkhead, but it couldn't be - theres nothing there to rattle. Mine also only seems to make the noise for the first couple of mins in the morning.

Shrek, I'd be really interested to know if you got to the bottom of the cause of the noise?

Old topic or not, you can rule out the cat, coz it ain't got one! Td5 is so clean, it doesn't need one.

Thanks, I read that too when I got the mag and dashed straight out of the house to check, but the pipes shown on the picture seem to be pretty secure in mine. Mine's not really a buzzing though more a rattle, but it was well worth a look (maybe it could still be this but I'm not looking properly).

The other rattle mentioned in that guide was the 2nd row rear seats, mine has this, which I fixed with some bubble wrap and foam. It mentions in the mag about a modification for this, but I've never seen that mentioned anywhere else.
