Hi

I'm looking for a place to mount a 1.5kg fire extinguisher in a 97 Disco Tdi. Anybody done this? Pictures?

Howzit Henk,

I can't help with suggesting a place in the Disco 'cos I only have Defenders.

I just wanted to tell you about what happened to me in Cabo Delgado province in Moz. I was dricving along a very bad road that oscilated between hard and soft sand. The sand there is very white, and very fine. It gets everywhere, especially if you're in a Defender.

Anyway after hitting a particularly bad pothole in a soft section of the road, the van filled up with sand, so much so that I had to stop and get out of the car.

It turns out that it wasn't sand at all. My toolbox had bounced over the back seat and smacked the fire extinguisher, knocking the whole neck off the bottle. What a mess.

I guess what I'm saying is that when you mount the extinguisher, make sure your tool box can't fall on it :D

Cheers,
Marc

Hi Henk,

I mounted mine (2kg) on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel. I would have liked to have mounted it beside the drivers seat, but it was not going to fit. The passengers footwell is fairly wide, so it doesn't seem to be too much of a problem or get in the way too much.

I will try & get a pic tonight to post tomorrow.

I have mine mounted on the dog guard. I know that time is of the essence in a fire situation but it only takes seconds to reach. Mounted in line of sight to the rear n/s pillar so vision not affected. Just visible in picture at http://www.harrydevine.com in directory "Wigtown 2005" then "dogs on holiday", image DSC00851.JPG. In practice it doesnt take long to reach. This means fewer mounting holes.

Mine is zip-tied to the front of the passenger seat. I have the full covers on my seat-bases, so alongside the outer edge of the drivers seat is unfeasible.

Originally I was going to mount it under the front edge of the drivers seat, but the thought of it coming out of the bracket (or pulling the CD changer cover away) & rolling under the pedals wasn't a pleasent thought.

So it can stop where it is.

Replacing it with a Defender soon, in the past I had it fitted behind my right ear onto the Dog-Guard in my 110Tdi Hard-Top & under the front lip of the internal bulkhead in my 90CSW-V8

Sorry the delay in coming back with pics, I got somewhat distracted!!

I thought about various locations including mounting the extinguisher on the rear of the cargo barrier, but decided I wanted to have it accessible from the front seats. I am planning on installing a smaller (1kg) one in the cargo area. Before I mounted it to the transmission tunnel, I just made sure that the passenger seat could still slide all the way forward & that the glovebox lid could still hinge all the way down for accessing wiring, etc in behind the dash.

It is also important to use a good quality metal bracket if available to prevent the extinguisher coming free in an accident, especially if it is mounted behind the driver and/or passengers.

Hope the pics assist you in evaluating the different mounting options?
