View Full Version : Double Damn for a Double Whammy....

After 2 years and 20K miles of almost total mechanical reliability, my '96 Tdi throws 2 unrelated wobblies in 1 week....

1. Viscous fan rattling badly  , but intermittently - I've heard the easiest way to resolve this is just to remove it and run with no fan, at least for normal winter driving on roads. Any views, or cheap replacement options?

2. Worse to come with the MOT inspection - failed on a couple of inner sill corrosion perforations :flushed: . Garage is plating it up now and estimates 3 hours labour and £90 cost onto the MOT for a pass, which seems reasonable, BUT maybe I should have instructed a complete inner sill replacement rather than filling the holes? I expect that is bound to be on the cards in the next year anyway. Any views on costs of say replacing both sides inner and outer sills? Paddocks seem to retail these replacement sills at around £37 + £37 = £74 per side, but is that a costly welding up job, or more costly than plating the holes that appear.

In despair.....keith
