Had a miserable day today, started out early this am heading for Carlisle (40 mile trip)
About ten miles in noticed a rubbing / vibration noise from drive train :(
Pulled over thinking possible tyre deflated, checked all tyres and hubs,...All fine
Continued on further 5-6 miles on whinning kind of noise noticed if i moved steering left to right, in central position no noises. Starting to think front wheel bearing.
Stopped checked all around car again ...no evidence of anything wrong.
Continued on about another 5 miles and noise starts again and gets louder then felt car pull from rear, similar to fealing of some one applying handbrake whilst driving:eek:
stopped asap and jacked up front nearside wheel to check bearing = fine
jacked up rear nearside bearing fine but............. lots of dirty oil covering rear diff guard and lower diff:(
so got recoverd home, i am now clueless as to whats happend ?
I think maybe cracked diff = loss of oil and run dry ?? what will this mean? new diff ? or can it be welded up?
if not i dont know what to try ? halfshafts??

any ideas to help fault finding will be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks

Do you still have a your RotoFelx? If so, that may have gone bad, caused the vibrations and maybe caused the seal going into the diff to go as well. Dont know about the whinning noise though

I think JC means the rubber doughnut on the propshaft.

Personally, as the rear axle tried to stop forward momentum, the diff is shot.
It's clearly lost it's oil, and seized the differential gears (hence the vibration when turning, causing the inner wheel to scrub).

You'll need to clean the oil off the casing to find where it's all come from.
Front seal collapsed (caused by pinion bearing failure, as JC said, caused by rubber doughnut)?
Cracked casing, or one of the diff planet gears locating pins fell out, cracked the casing, caused loss of oil and subsequent total failure?

Thanks for advice,
Found the fault today, nearside wheel bearings siezed onto stub axle.
Once stripped down bearing disintergrated and inner race siezed solid onto stub axle.
The knackered bearing has also gauged grooves and pits into hub, so also need new hub.
All parts priced up and ordered today for Saturday morning collection.
All being well i should be mobile by Saturday afternoon.

Thanks Again For Advice

PS do have oil leak on diff still need to pressure wash the gunk off to see where its coming from.

I discovered the same thing on mine when I changed my CV joint. Roller bearing went all over the shop floor.

They're very prone to it .. I've replaced 3 of my 4, and re-greased the other just to be sure !

funny your on this subject guys, i had the exact same thing driving home from work the other week, funnily enough the front nearside bearing had collapsed, while it was in the garage i decided to have a check round, the nearside back had excessive play, luckily for me the missus works just down the road from bearmach and stopped by on her way home to fetch the bits i needed, hows that for wife material...... also realised to my dismay that that the swivels barley had any oil left in them, good job i bought the old one shot grease a while back, in it went. problem sorted..... for now.
