Hi,

I was just wondering if anybody could give me any advice on a 2000 W Reg LAND ROVER Discovery 4.0 V8i GS

I am looking to trade my 1.8 freelander due to the problematic k series engine.

who makes the 4.0 V8 engine and is it reliable and does it suffer with Head Gasket Failure?

Thanks

Gavin

hmmm.. no it doesn't suffer with head gasket problems!

Cracked bores, detached cylinder liners and porous blocks are a favourite with the V8 though!

Most run forever with little trouble mind, but be prepared for big fuel bills!

I guess you mean a safer purchase?

To be honest, a well maintained FreeLander is going to be cheaper to run. If you want the best version I'd go for a diesel engine. The later TD4 engine is superb, but even the earlier L-series is good.

It depends what you want it for I suppose. If you fo 100% of your driving on the road you may better buying a car, or something like a Toyota RAV4. But if your heart is set on a Land Rover then the FreeLander is a great car.

Discoverys are good, especially if you want to tow something big or want to venture seriously offroad. I have an old one, so my experience is tainted. But they are not cheap to run and invariabley go wrong as some point.

If you mean in terms of passenger safety, the Disco would win in a fight. I had a Freelander as a loaner a few years back when my Disco was in for a service. The doors are tinny compared to the Disco to the point that a Disco's door feels like it weighs more than an entire Freelander.

The original 3.5 lt was a Buick small block, developed over time into the 3.9.

Not sure about the 4.6.not had a lot to do with them.

Six of one, half dozen of the other really. Don't look after them, they both break. But twice as much on the V8.

Camshafts, Hydraulic Followers, Head Gaskets, Electronic components,

and lots and lots of fuel........
