I've seen a used safety devices rack I'm considering for £250. Seems a lot for 6 years old but good condition. Is it worth that or any alternative suggestions for a similar price.

Seems a lot to me too. Full racks start at about double that, going up to around £1000. I suspect the Safety Devices racks are holding their money because of the scarcity. Although Safety Devices are trading (again), I'm not sure that they are producing racks or just roll cages.
Which rack is it? They offered two heights, one of which would require you to remove your roof rails. Also, is it definitely a Disco 2 rack? The racks for a Disco 1 won't fit or not without some adjustment any way.

I was thinking about a new rack till I found this:

It's a disco 2 highlander tall rack to miss the sunroofs and roof rails.

I'd seen that thread and also heard similar myself. I was looking for a rack for my Disco 2 in the summer and would have placed an order with Safety Devices but SWMBO was not keen - she wanted a rack that would definitely fit a roof top tent which the Safety Devices racks won't do. In the end I went for a Patriot rack which was more expensive but I didn't lose my money! You may have seen the car around - it travels into Sheffield most days. No pics to post here, sorry.
After saying all that, I still prefer the Safety Devices racks myself. I wanted the low rack as fitted to the G4 Discoveries (I would have happily removed the roof rails and lived with the loss of an opening sunroof).
The Patriot rack is quite good, but sits a fair bit higher and is flat, not following the roof line

I've found the price of the rack as £595 in the summer before they relocated. Although it's a lot its a big saving on a new rack. It would have been my first choice new too due. The sun roofs come in handy with 7 of us in the car! Decided! :)
What does your disco look like? I see quite a few around but most won't return a wave.:( I'll keep my eye out. Which area's of Sheffield?

I am also in the market for a similar type of rack, I really liked the look of Highlander, but have been put off now by some of the things I've read in these posts.
The patriot looks good on their website, but so does the Windcheeta on the Scorpion Racing adverts.
I see in the Bearmach catalogue that they have a rack which looks similar to the highlander (although not powder coated) or smaller options as well.
So... loads of choices then.... I'm on the lookout for words of wisdom from those who have already walked this path....

I found the same sort price - the Patriot rack I actually bought was about £150 more.
My Disco is a '99 GS. It sits on 19" RR3 Vogue alloys, has the roof rack fitted and a snorkel so it's not that hard to spot. Normally to be found in the S11 area of Sheffield - during the day at least.

When I was looking for a rack, as already mentioned in this thread I fancied the Safety Devices one but couldn't find one because of their problems. I'm not too keen on the look of the Bearmach rack so really the choices were the Front Runner (as Scorpion sell), the Patriot or Hannibal. Trek Overland also supply one. The Hannibal was a bit pricey - coming in at about £1000 if you wanted it powder coated (I did) and the quality of the finish on the Front Runner was a bit questionable.
I got the Patriot. Excellent finish, quality is superb, service from the Company was also spot on (Hogarth Engineering). If there is a down side, you could argue that the rack is over engineered making it a bit heavy so already adding to the weight limit for roof loads. Saying that, though, loaded up with touring gear (tent, awning etc etc) I can't fault it and it hasn't affected the handling (Disco 2 with ACE) one bit.
There is a bit of wind noise and it has certainly affected the fuel consumption but they all will. I don't take the rack off - it has been very useful.

I recently bought a Frontrunner Expedition 90 (yes.... to fit a Def 90) with an overall lenght of 1,95m. Fit's nicely, see my website for pics (look under modifications)
Personally I would love to buy the SD rack but they are very rare in the NL and thus expensive, even second hand.
happy holidays from the Netherlands

Sounds like I'll recognise it. :)
I'm based near the uni and travel a lot round Sheffield so I'll keep my eyes open.

Looks really well on the disco. :) I like how low it's sits on the roof. You've got me wondering as thats the best alternative I've seen to the safety devices rack. Did it need any modifying to fit? Another small issue, will the front sun roof open still?
Nice website.
Enjoy the hols. :) :)

No mods to fit. I've got high mounting brackets so the front sunroof opens in 'first-gear'. due to the winddeflector it cannot open completely. The rear roof cannot be opened!
The high brackets can be bought from either Defparts or Frontrunner.
Good luck!

Small world - I used to live in Bicester so was in Aylesbury quite a bit (if you know Bicester, you'd understand...) but now work In Sheffield - it was to far to drive from Bicester, even with a Disco...
I'll look out for you. When I can remember to bring a 'photo of the car in to work I'll post a picture.

Hi Tony
New to the site so not sure i can write about a subject after so long .
Read your mesage above and thought you might know more on the DS rack. I want one (full lenght) for my 110. like you i like the look but will be using an Eezi tent some times. My question is do you have to cut the back rail off if you want a tent at the back? And have your thoughts on SD / Patriot racks changed since you post your message?
Thanks for any info and please tell me if i'm writing in the wrong spot as this is all new to me. cheers

Jemel, Hi and welcome to the forum!
I don't suppose there is a right and a wrong place to post on here; they all seem to get read.
No, my thoughts on the SD rack have not changed, nor have my views on the patriot rack. One more bonus with patriot racks, over and above those already printed in this thread, is that the sides and back can be easily removed. The back rail is, itself, independant so that it can be quickly unbolted to fit a roof top tent. If your tent is a 1.2 or 1.4 m, it will go between the side rails. If it's the 1.6 m version then the side rails will also have to be unbolted.
You can remove all rails if you want to and just have a flat rack. On the larger racks (as in the 110 version), the side rails 'dip' towards the front and there is no front rail fitted. This cuts down on wind noise and no doubt improves fuel consumption (I mentioned in an earlier post that fuel suffers with the rack fitted). I have spoken to patriot about having these side rails made for my rack but haven't actually ordered them yet.
Hope this answers your question!
Tony
