Scottish Off Road Club (http://www.sorc.org.uk) are organising their annual Snow Hunt on Saturday 15 March.
Folks assemble at Lix Toll Garage by Killin for about 100 miles of roads, taking in some of the high passes in the area, finishing at The Royal Dunkeld Hotel, Dunkeld where the AGM will be held.
Due to the popularity of this event, to keep the convoy at managable size, members of the club will get priority.
Details can be found on the SORC website (http://www.sorc.org.uk)

*Note to self*
Replace the heater fan resistor so it does more than 'all stop' or 'full ahead'.
See you there Renny! I'm assuming Steve will be there too, with or without his car keys...... Must noise up Mr Turner and his amphibious 101"
We came past Lix Toll today, there's a LOT of snow up on them thar hills, dunno if it'll still be around for the snow hunt, but here's hoping!

Sounds like fun. I'll need to check the cash flow around the time. Anyone know if there's LPG near-by?

Which reminds me.............how do you fit snow chains? :D
The set I have has a metal rim with the chains attached to it. Does the rim go behind the wheel or infront of it? If it's behind........how do you get it to fit over??

You won't need chains for the Snow Hunt. Many of the motors will be running on road tyres. If the snow is that deep it totally knackers any hope we have of making it to the AGM on time. Most of the time we get all 20+ vehicles home safely.
Having said that we have had to use the lead vehicle to burst through snow banks on the Ben Lawyers road and shovel the road clear. We usually spot for a bit of recovery of cars that have fallen off the road, best off all was a Porsche 911 with bald tyres that we manhandled through 180 degrees.

I did that very thing once at the wheel of a very kitted out SIIA Station Wagon. Imagine my surprise to discover an abandoned Capri under the snow drift!
The funniest thing I have ever encountered in snow was a few years back, took the then sandbag for a trundle in the hills around Cleish. We were flagged down by a traffic cop, and asked if we could tow his 'patrol car' out of the snow a few hundred yards up the road. I was astonished to find a jam sandwich Range Rover when we got round the bend. As it was by now blowing a real hoolie and I'd no desire to be out of the car attaching ropes etc I asked if I could try to drive it out of it's predicament (the grass verge, well where it would be had it not been for snow). Amazing what low box and a gentle foot can achieve....... Evidently Fife Police don't/didn't teach them to really drive their vehicles.

Only a couple of days to go 'till the Snow Hunt, are any of you intending to join us? OK there probably won't be much snow but the ford should be reasonably deep. I just hope our webmaster doesn't float off in his Kangoo:hahaha:
BTW Higmy,
has the demon Badger done his work? Or is the hold up at the Kirkliston fitting station?

Pity about that. We'll maybe see you at something later on in the year. Keep checking the website, there's usually something on each month.

Still thinking about it...only problem is I spent about 3 hours this week cleaning the chassis. Can't be bothered doing that again in the near future.

Renny - there is a pub/bar/place of licensed refreshment at the end of Saturday. (Hint "no" is a v. bad answer. "Yes" is appropriate, while "certainly what'll you have" is most kind of you and damm near perfect - got me a designated driver, nyaa nyaa).
Mr Star : are you fitting the fridge for Saturday?

The refrigerated device will indeed be installed in good time. This far I've cleaned the beast inside and out (even the glass), topped up the fluids, well still got the swivels to check and took it out for a run, to make sure it still does. Got the quieter tyres to go on and I'm thinking the front spoiler will be making a re appearance once I've been down to Engineering Agencies for some bolts.
I can't really get away with stopping at that bakers to chat up the staff this year, can I? :behead:
Maggie, knowing where we are going, and looking at the weather I wouldn't worry too much about dirtying the chassis.

Well I should contribute to the day, so I'll volunteer to undertake that strenuous duty for the both of us - after all what are friends for. Just you keep SWMBO's bacardi levels topped up.

Why's Maggie got a paranoia over a dirty underside?

It's just such a hassle getting her nether-regions cleaned out. I also wanted to touch up some of the rusted bits... the rear crossmember got damaged a while back and now it's a rusty mess... I've bought a wire brush hammerite and a sable brush...and had every intention of trying to tart her up a bit this weekend....what to do?:dunno1: :dunno1:

Drinking facilities are available at the AGM venue - The Royal Dunkeld Hotel
Alternative drinking facilities - on-board refreshments
Cheap option - plenty of burns and Loch Tay has a supply adequate for even my two dogs!
Underside washing - free chassis wash at Little Glenshee ford - depth variable All of the route is on sealed roads
[/list=1]
H_S, when are you intending to leave home, I'll keep an eye open as I pass each of the filling stations:hahaha:
I'm dropping into Polmont to pick up the other Steve T, then to Morrisons to pick up a headlamp washer jet as the Disco was attacked in a car park last week:Cross: so I'm hoping to leave here just after 7 and hit Morrisons just after they open at 8. Give me a call on the mobile en-route or CB should be on 16 if I can get myself organised.

Afternoon Chief. 7.00am start - oh I think not.
Glad to see that in flight catering was on the list of approved refreshment methods. If I don't have to drive, I'm bloomin' well going to take advantage and enjoy.
Have ordered clutch assembly, cylinders and flexi-pipe, water pump, mounts and sundry bits and pieces and put me name on another gearbox, + EFI manifolds and down pipes and another radiator today. (oddly I listened to summatt on't radio this morning on the economic chaos caused by unplanned therapeutic shopping trips/phone-calls: now what could that be?
Renny
13th Mar 2003, 14:53
Is the flexi-pipe to connect to the on-board drinks chiller?
I also want to have a look at Mr Cushlie's stock of 90s. There's at least one I could be tempted with.

7 am b'christ! Oh what times are these when people may say '7 am' at will, why even those who design and install cinema sound systems are not safe!
We'll be departing my gaff absolutely no later than 9am, preferably a little before, prolly 8.30'ish.
Oy! Enough of the petrol station jokes, the way the Dubya is going Diesel will cast twice petrol shortly!
I get 24mpg out of her if I'm gentle with the loud pedal, and I find I don't often need to be anything but gentle to medium with it, 'firm' is reserved for doing battle with max'd Novas, and scaring unbelievers into submission :p

Pre flight checks now complete:-
New air horns fitted.
Alloys with A/T's finally got them balanced and are back on the car, so we don't have to put up with M/T handling and noise. Yee haw!
CB re-installed and tested, much fiddling with grounds to get the VSWR down!
Front spoiler re-attached, now QD with butterfly nuts and plenty of copperslip.
Fridge installed and run up.
CD player cleaned. Tested with 'Ride of the Valkyries' down East Port earlier this afternoon.
Just headlamp washers to re-plumb, and drivers door courtesy light switch (very important, the door bottom puddle light doesn't work without it!)
GPS programmed with some strategic waypoints (Lix Toll, Bakers, Pub, etc.)
See you early tomorrow morning.

Couldn't we all put this back two weeks.
Have had a phone call and the new engine could be here on Sunday. Much as I like chauffeur service, There's still something to be said for applying a little pressure to the loud pedal and watching jaws drop (bleeding ears - an optional extra).

Morning m'dear from a very misty Dunfermline!
Nealy 30 motors of various shapes and sizes, including a 4x4 Renault Kangoo, set out from Lix Toll garage and finished up in Dunkeld.
We did indeed find some snow, none to actually drive on but it was there at the side of the road. I was tempted to scoop some of it into the fridge in the back to prove it to the folks back home!
You are absolutely right, it was a GORGEOUS day, I did nearly all 200 odd miles with the roof open and the windows down, lovely all that fresh air and V8 noise coming in. Mr Hingmy installed himself in the rear leather armchair and proceeded to eat and sleep most of the trip. You have never seen anyone eat like this in your life, he just never stops, the irritating part is that he'd dissapear if he turned sideways!
Once in Dunkeld we ate, I dozed in the bar until the agm started, I tried to doze through the agm, but certain parties made tha impossible. Got home at 10.40pm, had a beer, was in bed by 11, utterly worn out from all that sun and fresh air.
I think next year we will have to be a little earlier in the year to have a better crack at the snow. Nebbermind though, it was a grand day out.

Could get used to this chauffer driven thing.
Must remember pipe lagging next time!!!!
photographing from the sunroof of a moving rangey, rangey bounces 'round corner, yours truly gets a range-rover roof in the ribs - much whinging. A little padding wouldn't hurt.
Lovely weather, a weeks grazing in one morning, just need to find the landrover coffeemachine in the optional extras catalogue.

I don't know how you're going to achieve that, you out eat me 3:1 and I'm well into the 'ate all the pies, the wrappers they came in, the van that delivered them and it's driver' stage of padding!
Might have been a better plan to put you in the back with the top tailgate open, I've done video that way, Benbo tripod with it's legs splayed on the boot floor, worked very well indeed.

Hmm, see the secert is eating everything twixt pie factory and here as well - 'tis the roughage that eases the weight problem. Avoid the wrappers and make sure the drivers are all low calory. Remember always read the nutritional information.
