Hi folks... Mentioned in another thread was how a Jap 4x4 uses an electro magnetic device, in place of the VC unit.. I thought that if some enterprising engineer were to invent a replacement for the useless std VC fitted to the Free, it would sell like hot cakes! again make it manually operated and select it only 'when in the mud'. Running on the roads with the rear wheel freewheeling would save on fuel cost perhaps? Then again you would need to retain the VC unit and run this 'clutch' in series because of the differing sppeds on the front/rear wheels... Or would you?

Not really, the series and Jap standard models engage the 4WD with no 3rd diff.

A clutch like we used on combine harvesters or similar to the Air Con Compressor would work.

Hyundai use the Electric clutch method on the ABS equiped models. It is very good.
